RS Recommends: How To Clean Your Records (To Make Them Sound Good) - Rolling Stone

If you notice a lot of pops, clicks, and jumps on your records , it is probably time to clean up your collection. While not all damage is caused by dust (proper storage and a good pen are also important factors), thorough cleaning can really make a big difference in the final sound of your records.

Much of the creak and creak we associate with discs comes from dust and dirt on the surface, and you'll be amazed at the difference between before and after. Just touching your records can cause damage as the natural oils build up dust in our hands and fingers that can damage the grooves on the record.

How to clean your records

In this article, we've provided some basic steps for cleaning your vinyl records along with our favorite products that will help remove dirt and keep your collection in good condition for years to come. Here are some things to keep in mind while looking for the best way to clean your records.

Start Drying - The first step is to remove all of the dry dust before using any liquids, and a carbon fiber or velvet brush is a good place to start. If you use a liquid cleaning spray while there is still dust on the surface, it will push the dust further into the grooves and harden it, leaving you in a bigger mess than it did at first.

Be aware, however, that brushing can attract dust from static electricity; You can only brush it on one side to stick on the other, or all over the turntable if you clean for a while. your record is spinning. This is why an anti-static brush is important. You can also carefully place your record on a lint-free cloth, pick up the dust in a straight line with the carbon fiber brush and sweep it off the edge of the table so that it does not stick immediately. Then take out the softest velvet brush to collect the remaining dust.

Liquid cleaning - There are several ways to do this by hand with a cloth or in a cleaning device. A liquid cleaner, often referred to as a surfactant or wetting agent, is exactly what it sounds like: a concentrated cleaning solution that is diluted with distilled water and applied directly to the window (as a side note, it is important to always use distilled water) as tap water can contain contaminants that are harmful to vinyl). The solution itself doesn't clean much, but when combined with a brush or rag it really helps loosen up dirt and dust that has built up over time, reducing surface tension and allowing it to penetrate deep into invisible grooves. You can even carry out a second cleaning afterwards with only distilled water to remove any cleaning agent residues.

Finishing - When you're done with the liquid cleaning, it's time to get dry. Never store your discs while they are still wet. Some kits contain soft cloths specially designed for cleaning vinyl records, but if you don't have a clean microfiber cloth, it will do. If you prefer not to damage the surface with a cloth, using a dish rack can be an easy and inexpensive solution to air-dry your records as well.

Storage - After cleaning, the proper storage of your document collection is part of the maintenance process that cannot be overlooked. Never stack them vertically as this will put immense and uneven pressure on the discs, causing them to warp and break. Even if they are stored horizontally, make sure they are not too tight and leave some space in between. Also, opt for a good inner liner - the paper liners provided can often be dust magnets, but an anti-static polyethylene sleeve can keep dust out.

Maintenance : A common question is when the brush cleans registers, what does the brush clean? A simple, unused toothbrush is a solution to brushing your vinyl brush after every cleaning, shaking off the dust and keeping it ready for the next time.

Also, be sure to always hold discs by the edges and / or the center label, never by the playable surface. Don't forget the needle either, because it gathers all the dust and dirt out of the grooves; Fortunately, a small, soft-tipped toothbrush can easily knock it over. If your disc has scratches that are too deep or warped, unfortunately these cleaning solutions will not be able to help. But for routine maintenance and to keep your records in tip-top condition, here are our recommendations on buying the best products for cleaning your records.

1. Spin-Clean windshield washer kit

It was by far the best, most complete, thorough, and comprehensive household cleaner we have ever tried. You don't have to be a vinyl lover or a master collector, even beginners can clean their entire collection with this kit.

Two rollers fit inside, with three grooves to securely hold and rotate all disc sizes from 12 "to 10" and 7 ". Two brushes slide right into the center grooves and a solid line tells you exactly how much distilled water you have need to add so that the brushes are immersed and you can drip the washing liquid into them.

From there, turn the disc clockwise and counterclockwise three times to make sure all of the grooves are clean. Also, don't worry about damaging the label as the brushes won't touch it and the liquid won't damage it either.

When done. Take out the disc and dry it with the soft drying towels provided (it is recommended that you wash it first for extra softness). The difference is remarkably instantaneous, both to the ears and eyes, and it even smells nice, and it's also very satisfying to see all of the dirt that has peeled off your panels.

A bottle of Spin Clean washer fluid is included, enough for even the most dedicated pickers to clean around 700 windows.

When not in use, the cover protects the sink from dust and dirt ingress, and you can even leave the water / solution in it for up to a week to use it next (just remove the brushes first and rinse off).

2. Unlimited cleaning brush for audio recording

This is a great first step in cleaning your registers before doing anything deeper as it removes the top layer of dust and dirt and reduces the risk of pushing them further. The brush cleans the surface of the disc as it rotates on the platter and gently cleans the dirt with its high quality carbon fiber bristles. It also reduces static when cleaning and, in addition to its structure, looks good aesthetically.

3. Big Fudge cleaning kit for vinyl records

If you're concerned about scratching your records while cleaning, this kit is gentle on your records and offers an ultra-soft, gentle sweep to remove dust, dirt and even fingerprints.

The velvet brush is incredibly soft, anti-static, and can also clean particles from the needle (a mini brush is also included). This kit comes with a good cleaning solution as well as a handy travel bag that makes it a great vinyl cleaning kit for DJs or people with their turntables.

4. GrooveWasher cleaning kit for records

Groovewasher was the most popular cleaning kit in the 1970s and it has only gotten better since then.

This brush is extremely gentle on your registers and cleans perfectly without leaving any unsightly residue.

It immediately feels anti-static, is completely safe for vinyl records, and removes dirt like oils, mold, and films. The walnut finish is a nice touch and the brush won't look out of place on your shelf or next to your record collection.

The supplied "cleaning fluid" leaves no disruptive traces and can be safely used on all discs. A little spray goes a long way.

In addition to all the comfort and joy, vacation inevitably brings a lot of excitement with it. This is when some serious vacation stress advice comes in handy.

Perhaps you spend every moment of your day busy with the daily routine as it is, not to mention the endless list of to- do's like shopping, packing, baking, cooking, cleaning, and getting dressed.

Sure, meetings are fun, most of them, so the extra effort can make it seem like it's worth it right now.

The problem is that too much running, enjoying the holidays, lack of sleep, and uncovered emotions can tire you out faster than you can sing "Deck The Halls".

RELATED: 7 Tips to Take Away From Holiday Stress This Year

Vacation stress counseling is a real self-help solution.

In addition to the hustle and bustle and partying, the Christmas season often brings a variety of difficult emotions such as fear, sadness, frustration, loss of loved ones and shame for not being up to the task.

Partying during a pandemic can create a new layer of fear . It means you need to give yourself a little more love and compassion.

So what can you do so that your vacation to-do list doesn't have to sacrifice your health and happiness?

Take a break and start self-care strategies now.

You do your best to give your family and friends the best festivities ever, but you will achieve nothing if you are too tired to enjoy every precious moment.

Here are 10 expert tips for vacation stress so you can enjoy this year's festivities.

1. Sing.

Whether you're singing in the shower or washing up or attending your children's virtual school, take your time every day to sing to your heart's content.

Science says it makes you happier by activating your vagus nerve and activating your parasympathetic nervous system. It can promote wellbeing and a sense of belonging.

2. Take a walk in nature.

The ideal time for a brisk walk is before the freezing winter.

Wrap up, grab a hot cocoa to take away and enjoy the beauty of the season - dazzling lights, the scent of pine trees, fresh leaves or light snow under your feet.

3. Sleep.

As much as you want to stay up to see another Christmas movie, eat another plate of goodies, dance until dawn at your annual party, or stay up wrapping gifts, your body needs to rest.

Better to go to bed at a decent time than wake up with a migraine, puffy eyes, or a terrible virus.

4. Diffuse some essential oils.

It's amazing what a roller skating or home essential oil spray can do for your mood.

Try classic sweet and flavorful scents like cinnamon, clove, orange and incense, and peppermint to lift your spirits and give you energy to shop and clean. See it's all over!

Bonus: You fight germs and strengthen your immune system at the same time.

5. Enjoy foods that improve your mood.

By eating "happy foods" that contain the right nutrients and neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, you can eat for health and happiness on vacation.

The list includes nuts, cherries, spinach, fish, oatmeal, espresso, and even dark chocolate. Don't feel guilty for saying "yes" to these foods because they are all about taking care of yourself. Serious.

6. Find moments of mindfulness.

Sitting down for 20 minute meditation may not be realistic if you're trying to do more runs.

But it can be anything you need to enjoy your morning coffee intensely, play a few minutes with Scruffy in the garden, or snuggle under the covers with your partner before rushing out the door to indulge in the little joys ...

7. Begin a humble but powerful gratitude practice.

Put a gratitude journal or small notebook on your bedside table. Start small, write one thing that will make you grateful each morning.

Once you get used to it, you can make a longer list or give up the idea of a vacation-only list altogether, because who needs another list now?

8. Do good works.

Kindness is important to others, and according to science, it makes you feel good too . Not only does it make you feel like you are helping someone else, it also reduces your stress levels, improves your physical health, makes you happier, and even lets you live longer.

9. Set limits.

Often you think you have to do everything. Who says? Manage your vacation expectations as well as those of others . Consider reducing the number of events or their duration so you don't feel trapped in a hamster wheel.

Protecting your energies is especially important for introverts who are quick to burn out from long social engagements that require them to hold onto a facade.

It's perfectly okay to say "no" to a dinner party or gift exchange. No reason is required. (Either way, Covid could be your reason this year.)

When attending events, you are spending time with the people who nourish your soul rather than those who make you feel imperfect.

10. Ask for help.

The most important strategy during the holidays and any time of the year is to ask for help when you need it. Better yet, ask for help before you need it.

Support can include the children decorating the mantle or tree, letting your partner shop, or calling a friend for much-needed ideas or moral support.

A short nap or a bubble bath to recharge the batteries or a call to a hotline if it gets too difficult can help.

People who take care of it are out there. Give him a little help and you will take on a shovel.

Even if you have a lot to do at this time of year, with a little more personal attention you can reduce the stress and enjoy everything the vacation has to offer.

The woman who posted her advice on TikTok said all she needed was hot water and any type of sodium percarbonate.

First, put your dyed white item in a bowl.

Then you pour sodium percarbonate over the stain.

Then soak in hot water and the stain will go away.

"When water is added, this powder form releases hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate," explains the woman.

"It's super easy. You don't even have to rub it.

With coffee spilled on items that can't be easily moved or placed in a bowl, another cleaning fan said that shaving cream is also good for removing stains.

All you have to do is rub some white shaving cream on the stain and then wash off with water.

The expert also claimed that WD-40 and, believe it or not, vodka help remove stains from carpets.

Other stains can be removed from white clothes with dish soap, according to another cleaning expert on TikTok.

The guru behind Clean Freakz's TikTok account revealed that all you have to do is mix a little washing-up liquid with warm water to whiten white clothes.

Pour the mixture over the stain for 15 minutes, then wash the garment in hot water.

He said that while the process would have to be repeated, the clothes should be in good working order again.

The ZeroDust saga continues | Analog planet

JR Boisclair of WAM who provided the microscopic images replies to some of the comments below the original story .

"I enjoy the solid discussion about 'gel-like' cleaners. I certainly have no other dog in this fight than to continue our research on how to get the most out of the slots and protect our drives and cartridges.

I saw this material on stylus pens shortly after we launched our cartridge analysis service. For months, I assumed the material was just a sloppy use of the epoxy that was used to secure the pencil to the boom. This changed when I saw a cartridge so full of material that I couldn't find my measurement lines because I couldn't find a clean facet of the pencil. The only material-free part of this pencil were the contact edges of the grooves themselves, which had certainly been cleaned by the disc grooves and have probably remained in the grooves to this day. I called the cartridge owner and he confirmed that he was using Zerodust.

We're doing infrared spectrometry on two of these "gel cleaners" to see what they're made of. We are waiting for the results and will report.

I've experimented with many USB microscopes that cost several hundred dollars. I haven't found anyone who can map well enough with a pen to display this material. All images in the article were taken with our laboratory microscope. The soon-to-be-released WallyScope certainly has enough magnification and resolution for this.

Removing this material from your stylus and boom will take some work. Any button cleaner that is suitable for the button / bracket arrangement is not effective with this heavily plasticized material. At the very least, it takes a short bristle brush to rub off, but a few drops of pencil cleaner on the brush can help redeploy the material back onto the pencil with each stroke. Make sure to throw away your brush when you're done cleaning a poorly coated pen.

Time to put away the Onzow ZeroDust? | Analog planet

These latest microscope photos from WAM Engineering LLC (WallyTools) provide dramatic evidence that Ozow Zerodust leaves stubborn, difficult-to-remove residue on "clean" buttons and overhangs. It's a disturbing discovery.

This first photo shows a "clean" Onzow Zerodust pen with residues attached:

Here the same pencil after a long and difficult cleaning process with a carefully applied bristle brush and liquid pencil cleaner. Notice that there are still some scraps left:

Here is another picture of ZeroDust before cleaning.

And here is the same pencil after painstaking cleaning with stiff, running bristles. Be aware that there is stubborn residue

Equally worrying is that the residue is also sticking to the overhangs.

Here is the same overhang after a very fine clean.

Here is a photo that shows the height of the overhang that the material can adhere to.

There are other pictures showing similar debris from Onzow and the even stickier DS Audio cleaning pad. Analysis of the residue shows that it is not silicone, but a type of polymer. A more detailed analysis of the material will be carried out and reported here as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, you have the choice of whether or not to continue using one of these products, but I will use a stiff brush and a solvent-free button cleaner (I will be using Audio Intelligent, but Disc Doctor or other liquids that do not dissolve the cement should be safe in Ortofon Replicant and other types of sticks).

How to Prevent Christmas Decorations from Damaging Your Home Using Six Simple Tips - RSVP

Now that the Late Late Toy Show is behind us and December 1st is just around the corner, the holiday season is in full swing.

Cette année, limit the days when the Christmas decoration triggers a votre maison by using six simple tricks that will guarantee that the maison will be destroyed by the paillettes, the sols and the murs marquis par des decoration and that it will pass tenu from far.

Here , the DIY experts at GTSE reveal their top tips on how to decorate your home for Christmas without damage .

1. How to prevent your tree from ruining your soil

If you have carpets, especially deep pile carpets, a Christmas tree and its back can leave heavy marks if removed earlier in the year.

To prevent this from happening, lay the tree on top of a piece of sturdy plywood, then use wrapping paper to hide the wood and keep it upright. Tree supports, like other heavy objects, can easily scratch hardwood floors. Put a non-slip mat underneath to protect soil and be very careful when bringing the tree inside!

2. How to safely hang ornaments

Sometimes hanging up Christmas decorations can mean poking holes in the walls or using products that leave marks that are difficult to remove. There are a variety of products that you can use to make hanging ornaments, which will make cleaning up after Christmas a lot easier:

  • Tie a piece of string to the wall with nails or tape, then you can add dowels to hang cards and other sparkling decorations.
  • Hooks with special glue that make them easy to remove, such as. B. Cable ties.
  • Double-sided removable tape, although best used on lighter items.
  • Silly Putty can also be used in lighter decorations. Just roll it up into a ball and glue it between your wall and your decor.

3. How to prevent your dog from spoiling decorations

While it's a joy for the house, curious dogs, and especially those about to see their first Christmas party, may get overly excited and want to play with the decorations. The House.

Lindsay Arliss, Wood Green Dog Behavior and Training Specialist, The Animals Charity, explains some ways to prevent damage to Christmas decorations:

"If you have a very curious puppy or dog, you can help protect them and your tree. Using a playpen around the tree can prevent them from accessing it, which is helpful for young dogs who may be seeing their first Christmas and are more likely to chew on decorations or gifts.

"You can also invest in a tree that attaches to a wall or a slightly shorter tree that you can place in a unit out of reach of the dog. Your dog will likely get used to the tree fairly quickly, but watch them closely the first time they have direct access to the tree. Make sure strings of light, wire clips, garlands, and candles don't get in the way of curious dogs.

Women's hands decorate the Christmas tree

4. How to prevent glitter from going everywhere

One of the quickest, cheapest ways to keep pesky shiny balls from falling is to use an item that many people already have around the house, hairspray.

Spray the balls with aerosol-free hairspray to keep the glitter in place. You can also opt for a non-toxic acrylic sealer that will keep the glitter in one place longer. But let the sealer dry before displaying your decorations on your tree and around the house!

5. Avoid damaging your windows with artificial snow

When applying artificial snow spray to windows, first make sure to protect the floor and surrounding walls, and keep the can about 12 inches from the surface you plan to apply it to.

When removing snow, do not scratch it, as this can lead to greater contamination. Instead, spray a paper towel with a window cleaner, ideally a window cleaner, and rub the cleaner into the snow until it comes off. If snow begins to drip from the paper towel, get a new paper towel. Keep using the spray until it has been completely cleaned, but remember to clean it thoroughly.

6. Remove sticky stains

Sadly, when the New Year's celebrations and decorations are over, here are some tips to remove stubborn stains from your walls.

Citrus-based cleaning solutions are usually recommended when it comes to cleaning wallcoverings as they are the best to dissolve the oils and glue on the tack. After you've cleaned the area with a white cloth, dry it with a clean cloth to make sure no product residue damages your walls.

Alternatively, detergent can be used. Put a little on a toothbrush or scrubbing brush, then rub the liquid over the sticky stain in a circular motion, then wipe the wall to remove any residue.

To prevent the glue from removing paint from the walls, try rolling it in from the edges instead of pulling it straight. If there are any small sticky pieces left after most of it has been removed, just blot them off with more sticky. However, if the sticky is warm and soft it won't work, so try putting it in the freezer for a while. a little to harden it.

When using a cleaning solution, it is important to always test it on a less visible part of the carpet or wall, just in case it causes damage. It is also worth using a white cloth so that no paint is visible on your floors and walls.

Cleaning for health and hygiene in nursing homes - REMI network

It's no secret that over the past two years, COVID-19 has presented long-term care institutions with unique challenges, and compounded the challenges they already face. Lack of money, staff shortages and epidemic prevention are burning issues that will persist even after the pandemic.

The question is, how can long-term care institutions meet these challenges without adding additional manpower and resources? The answer is to implement more effective and efficient cleaning and hygiene tools, training and procedures.

These important tips will help you design a specific program that will improve cleanliness and hygiene while addressing specific long-term care challenges.

Challenge 1: lack of funding

While funding for long-term care facilities has increased during the pandemic, the lack of funding remains an issue. It is therefore all the more important to provide environmental workers with the tools, training and education they need for effective and efficient cleaning.

How To Choose Your Cleaning Tools Effectively:

  • Work with your supplier to ensure access to the most appropriate tools and supplies for your specific installation.
  • Train environmental workers to effectively perform cleaning tasks and procedures to improve all cleanings, from daily cleaning to deep cleaning. A combination of online, virtual, and face-to-face training will help your environmental workforce thrive.

Challenge 2: shortage of staff

With the increasing need for long-term care, there has been a decline in the number of caregivers , which was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The epidemics have hit facilities hard, and by July 2020, 48% of long-term care homes in Ontario had reported at least one epidemic. This resulted in a spike in the sector with 38 households reporting critical staff shortages in various functions due to issues such as employee contagion with COVID-19, fear of contagion with COVID-19 and concerns about access to equipment.

With fewer staff, finding inefficiencies in cleaning procedures is critical to maintaining the health and safety of residents and staff at the facility. With limited staff and resources, it is important to clean effectively without extending cleaning time. The easiest way to clean more effectively is to look for overly cleaned areas. While cleaning efficiency is critical, excessive cleaning can waste time and resources.

Here are three key ways to avoid excessive cleaning:

  • Cleaning by degree of soiling: The degree of soiling refers to the amount of dirt on a surface. Dirty surfaces require more rubbing during cleaning to remove surface dirt, debris and pathogens. Train environmental staff to focus efforts based on soil level for more effective and efficient results.
  • Concentrate on critical points of contact - Regardless of the facility, people come into contact with heavily used surfaces several times a day. Although it is not possible to keep high-touch surfaces completely sterile due to the high frequency of use, regular cleaning and disinfection is essential to minimize pathogens and the risk of epidemics. Some examples of important critical touch points are bed rails, bedside tables, hanging tables, call buttons, remote controls and touch screens.
  • Leverage innovation: Innovative cleaning technology can help optimize resources and improve results. By researching automation solutions and relieving the burden of repetitive cleaning tasks, environmental workers have more time to focus on more complex tasks. One area that can be easily dumped is floor cleaning. Independent sweepers and scrubber- driers like the Nilfisk SC500 save time and money on cleaning routines . These machines automatically control the flow of water and detergent at the speed of the machine to ensure that the cleaning solution is used efficiently and that large areas can be cleaned more cheaply.

Challenge 3: Outbreak Prevention

Epidemic prevention is essential in long-term care. The median age in long-term care facilities in Ontario is 83 , placing residents in the highest risk category for disease. They are also more prone to complications from these diseases, which makes epidemic prevention an important issue.

The best way to fight epidemics is to take proactive measures before they happen. These measures include promoting effective hand hygiene practices, proper cleaning and disinfection, and effective donning and doffing of PPE.

Prioritizing correct cleaning is one thing, checking and validating the cleaning effect is another. One way to keep track of cleaning is to manage your digital cleaning schedule. Ces systèmes has a journal on nettoyage activities in temps réel pour s'assurer qu'un nettoyage approprié est effectué, and includes the suivi des tâches qui doivent etre effectsuées plusieurs fois par jour, says that the nettoyage and the disinfection of the contact point students . You also have powerful reporting tools to help fine-tune resource allocation and job scheduling to improve cleaning schedule performance and efficiency.

Digital cleaning program management systems help environmental workers:

  • Check that the cleaning complies with the established cleaning protocols.
  • Proactively clean areas based on specific traffic thresholds
  • Track supplies usage and proactively replenish critical hygiene products based on automated alerts
  • Validate the quality and effectiveness of cleaning through audit and reporting functions.

Software features and functions vary; some, like Visionstate of the wandaNEXT ™ software, contain to-do lists, compliance reports, planning heat maps , room usage data and much more.

"We put workers in their place": Island Health should be carried out internally ...

People at Vancouver Island health facilities will benefit from stable, consistent, and supportive patient care as support services and pre-contracted services will return internally as hospital staff. 'Island health.

The government notes that these services are making a comeback internally after being outsourced to private companies for nearly 20 years.

In the fall of 2021, health officials reported a phased approach to the rollback of cleaning and restoration contracts under 21 commercial service contracts. Island Health is the first British Columbia agency to make this change.

"To the people who kept Vancouver Island hospitals, long-term care homes, and patient diets clean, I say, 'Welcome!' That's what Prime Minister John Horgan said. "Our government is correcting the mistakes made nearly 20 years ago to improve wages, working conditions and job security for healthcare workers. It is time for you to be treated like the valued team members you are again.

According to the province, the movement began when the British Columbia government enacted the Health Care Act Repeal Act by ordinance on July 1, 2019. Bill 47 repealed two existing laws: the law that respects improving the delivery of health services. and Social Services (Law 29) and the Health Cooperation Agreements Law (Law 94), which facilitated outsourcing of health care and had a significant impact on the workforce.

"Now we are assigning the employees to their place internally within our health authorities," said Health Minister Adrian Dix.

"Law 47 was an important step towards basic equality in public health care in our province. Repatriation from cleaning and restoration contracts is good for patients, workers, the care team, and the hiring of future caregivers. I am proud that Island Health is leading the way and I hope that more workers receive the wages, conditions and benefits they deserve to do the vital and vital work to well care for the people of British Columbia in our facilities.

Harry Bains, Secretary of Labor, added that the move will also enable the government to ensure that health center workers get the salary and job security they deserve.

Workers from six Island Health locations in cleaning, catering and mixed services will be moved to the following facilities for a total of 235 repatriated workers:

* Saanich Peninsula Hospital

* Queen Alexandra Center for Child Health

* Glengarry Hospital

* Aberdeen Hospital

* Hospital on Gorge Road

* Priory Long Term Care (Hiscock and Heritage Woods)

Health officials will continue to bring back workers under Bill 47 for the next two years, bringing about 4,000 workers back to the company. Other health agencies include Fraser Health, Providence Health Care, Provincial Health Agency, and Vancouver Coastal Health.

Parts of the Atlantic Ocean of Canada clear after three days of heavy rain and strong winds

Parts of the Atlantic Ocean of Canada clear after three days of heavy rain and strong winds

A shortage of bread, milk and other staple foods was reported in communities in southwest Newfoundland on Thursday.

And crews were deployed in east and north Nova Scotia to pump water from basements and repair roads that were flooded by torrential rains that struck parts of the Atlantic Ocean for three days.

In the coastal town of Port aux Basques in the southwest corner of Newfoundland, many roads have been repaired, including the Trans-Canada Highway, and a helicopter was deployed on Wednesday to rescue some local residents trapped in a yurt, a round tent shelter mostly from Tarpaulin and tall poles.

Resident Robert Hinks has confirmed that the city's supplies are dwindling.

"At the moment there is no bread in the city, there are no eggs to buy, the fresh milk is sinking," said Hinks in an interview on Thursday in Port aux Basques. "People go to gas stations and refuel for fear of running out of gas, (but) there is nowhere to go anyway."

The city has three petrol stations, "(but) none of the supply trucks come in ... I think they'll empty them next week.

In nearby Codroy, fire chief Brian Osmand said four of the area's highways were bulldozed, stranding 14 families.

"We are now taking the necessary steps to ensure their needs are met," Osmand said in an interview as his team of volunteers pumped water into the basement of the Hynes Chicken Villa in Tompkins, Earth. New.

Osmand said the Codroy Valley Volunteer Fire Department, which serves 16 communities, had already removed more than a dozen cellars as of Thursday. The fire marshal confirmed that surrounding communities lost their regular weekly deliveries of bread, milk and eggs on Wednesday, causing shortages.

"Maybe we could air some basic goods back into the community," he said.

When the storm was at its worst Wednesday night, Osmand said the rain was falling at an incredible rate. "It was uncomfortable," he said, adding that it was too windy to use the fire truck.

"We called the fire department and sometimes we couldn't see a foot in front of us. And it wasn't fog, it was just rain. It was terrible. This is the most rain I've ever seen and I'm 61 years old. ... It was like being hit by 10 dice at the same time.

Meanwhile, the ferry route between Port aux Basques and North Sydney, Nova Scotia, had to change its route due to road closures. Marine Atlantic announced on Thursday that it will temporarily realign the crossing to Argentina in eastern Newfoundland to ensure people and supplies can reach the province. This route is usually only offered in the summer months.

"The staff are working diligently to prepare the terminal (Argentina) to accept customers in this emergency situation," Marine Atlantic said in a statement.

The storm, which has been described as an elongated depression, stalled in the region between Monday and Wednesday. It feeds on the tropical humidity of the Caribbean and has dumped record amounts of rain in many communities, including Port aux Basques, where 165mm has accumulated in the past two days.

In Codroy Valley, a weather station registered 195 mm of rain. In addition, a gust in the Wreckhouse area reached 141 kilometers per hour.

In Nova Scotia, nearly 30 roads and bridges were closed when the rain stopped on Wednesday. Most of the damage occurred in Antigonish County in northeast Nova Scotia and in counties Victoria and Inverness in north Cape Breton.

Nova Scotia Prime Minister Tim Houston said Thursday it would cost at least $ 7 million to repair the damage, adding that the province would apply for federal funding. "There's a lot to be done to rebuild, repair, restore," he said.

Several communities along the northeast coast of Cape Breton have been inundated by more than 200 mm of rain and several landslides have forced the closure of sections of the scenic Cabot Trail in Cape Highlands National Park.

In the Ingonish River, Nova Scotia, on the east side of the Cabot Trail, floods and landslides have been reported during heavy rainfall that poured 278 mm of rain on the small community. On Thursday, the road between Neils Harbor and Ingonish remained impassable, leaving the two communities isolated.

"This week's storm hit our province, our people and our transportation infrastructure hard," said Allan MacMaster, acting Minister for Public Works for Nova Scotia, in a statement. "Keeping people safe is our number one priority, so check with your neighbors, especially the elderly. "

MacMaster has asked residents of the affected areas to avoid the streets.
