As COVID-19 cases continue to increase, people are asked to limit the amount of time they spend in public. But you may have to leave home to do basic things: food, gasoline, money. Any surface you touch while you are away may be contaminated with a corona virus. Consumer Reports includes tips to help you stay safe when you need to go out.

Pump gas? You must touch the pump, nozzle, and possibly the hose. Are you withdrawing money from an ATM? You must press the keyboard keys or touch a screen. Buy food? You have to push a basket or carry a basket. Any of these surfaces may expose you to the corona virus.

"Although this coronavirus appears to spread mainly when people cough or sneeze and drops of breath fall on nearby people, research suggests that it can survive on surfaces made of different materials for hours or days," said Sana Mujahid, consumer Reports.

To protect you, Consumer Reports offers these tips to protect you. Do not touch surfaces with your fingertips. Instead, use a pen or phalanx to press an elevator button or an ATM or touchscreen keyboard.

"If you can't avoid touching a very tactile surface, you can also take handkerchiefs with you and grab the doorknob or handrail. Throw away immediately after use. Another option is to use the sleeve to cover your hand or finger, "said Sana Mujahid, Consumer Reports.

And your smartphone may not be a public surface, but it can also contain bacteria, viruses and other germs. Clean it frequently with a 70% isopropyl alcohol cloth. And of course, even after all of these things, wash your hands as soon as possible and avoid touching your face.

It is also recommended to turn off the smartphone before cleaning and to avoid using bleach, soaking in cleaning products, or allowing moisture to enter the openings.
