Bass Lake neighbors clean up after Monday night's storm - ABC57

BASS LAKE, Indiana -- Bass Lake was hit hard by storms Monday night as winds up to 70 mph toppled trees and branches, downed power lines and destroyed entire docks and overturned boats.

"Last night was chaos," said John Brooke, owner of C&H Tree Service, who got caught in the middle of the storm on his way to a construction site. He said he had to cut down at least two trees before he could do it.

Things got busier the day after the storm, he said.

"Everything started falling apart and I got call after call. Around the block, a guy had a piece of spear on his roof, so it was sort of this big hole," Brooke said, gesturing to show the size of the hole.

"So how many calls did you have to make?" " I asked.

"It's my fifth," he replied.

The house where I met Brooke was lucky, he says; felled two trees there in early August that the owner feared would fall on the house in the next big storm.

One cabin on Boa Drive was less fortunate: Its owner, Terrence Ryan, told me his niece called him last night with the bad news.

"Fortunately there's not a lot of damage, but there's enough that there's a hole in the roof, water in the house, etc.," Ryan said. "We have a lot of cleaning to do."

Ryan added that luckily no one was hurt and the damage was repairable.

Other houses didn't come out so easily. At 210 South County Road, part of the roof of a chalet was blown off along with part of its roof. Neighbors told me that the owner had just finished remodeling the property.

Although Bass Lake has seen many powerful storms, some believe they may have been the worst in a long time.

"We've had storms and I usually get a call or two but it's been one after the other and they all have property damage so I'd say it's a lot more serious than I've seen in the past two months Brooke said, adding that it could take a week or two to repair any damage.

Brooke recommended that if homeowners have trees nearby and are concerned about them falling onto the property, they call a specialist as soon as possible.

"It Can Shrink Your Sheets": 5 Common Laundry "Mistakes" To Avoid When Washing Linens

4. Leaves too dry

Many use tumble dryers to dry their linens and bedding during the winter months as this can help ensure they dry completely. Tumble drying them can do more harm than good, though.

Deyan added, "If left in the dryer for too long (or even on top of the dryer to reheat) the sheets can shrink.

"To prevent uncomfortable sheets from getting in the way of a good night's sleep, dry your sheets naturally on a clothesline or clothes rack, preferably outdoors, for an even fresher smell, longer life, and better results."

If stains remain on your linens, the sun also acts as a natural bleach and can help remove unwanted stains.

How to get rid of mold on walls permanently: tips from experts

Mold on walls is unsightly at best, but at worst it's a sign that there are structural or moisture issues in your home that need to be addressed urgently. For most of us, however, a bit of mold in the bathroom is a common complaint and is often the result of too much moisture in the air combined with poor ventilation - easy things to fix. .

But it's important not to ignore mold on walls: according to the NHS , mold produces allergens that can lead to asthma attacks, sneezing, skin rashes and eye irritation. Or worse, living in humid and poorly ventilated spaces can lead to other health problems like respiratory problems or infections.

If you've seen unsightly mold stains on your walls, we've got the information you need on how to deal with them and steps you can take to ensure they go away for good. .

READ MORE: Improve the air quality in your home with our pick of the best air purifiers

What Causes Mold on Walls?

Essentially, mold thrives in humid conditions, and this moisture can accumulate as a result of activities in your home. We all know the steam and condensation that comes from a long hot shower , but if you have a powerful exhaust fan in your bathroom and open the windows frequently, it tends to dissipate. However, in poorly ventilated or windowless bathrooms, excessive humidity can quickly become a problem.

Similarly, moisture from cooking, such as cooking, can build up in kitchens. B. boiling pots on the counter, quickly accumulate in the air. And if it doesn't get anywhere, it can cling to cold walls and dampen them, which can lead to mold growth. And while it's not surprising that bathrooms and kitchens are major sources of moisture, you might not have thought of one of the often overlooked hidden causes of moisture in our homes: drying clothes. Water from freshly washed clothes drying in tumble dryers or radiators has to go somewhere, but in the dead of winter when all the windows are closed it can collect in the air, causing condensation on the walls and, before you know it, a mold problem.

These indoor sources of moisture are relatively easy to fix, but moisture from outside can also enter our homes and cause damp interior walls. And in these cases, you need some DIY skills or a handyman to help you fix the problem. Common external sources of moisture are leaking gutters and downspouts, tile or plumbing, but there are many other possible causes and if it's not obvious you may need to enlist the help of an expert to get to the root of the problem.

How to remove mold from walls

Washing the walls is the best way to get rid of visible mold growth. And while there are many mold-killing sprays you can buy, a solution of one part bleach to three parts water is an effective mold remover. Be sure to wear rubber gloves and, if possible, use a stiff brush to remove mold from crazing or chipped paintwork.

For a more eco-friendly approach, white vinegar will do the trick. Simply spray onto the area and leave on for at least 20 minutes before rubbing in and rinsing off.

However you decide to deal with mold, be vigilant: rinse and repeat the process to ensure all spores are removed, and always keep the wall as dry as possible.

Depending on the paint finish , black mold can sometimes stain walls and/or your scrubbing may have damaged the paint. If you do need to repaint the area, we recommend waiting a few weeks to make sure the mold is definitely gone so you don't paint the problem.

So make sure it's banned forever

It's worth paying a little more for a specific kitchen or bathroom color when it comes to painting or painting those misty rooms. Look for one that is moisture resistant and has mold or mildew resistant properties. In these high humidity areas, using the right wall paint can help prevent mold problems and if you need to address future mold growth they are a lot cleaner than ordinary emulsions.

Houses need to breathe, we can't stress this enough, so open those windows, even in winter! You don't have to let the house cool down, but take advantage of the hottest part of the day and open a few windows to let the air circulate. Ventilation is key to wicking away moisture and helping your home stay dry and mold free. Make sure the bathroom and kitchen hoods are working properly and are always on when you shower or cook. Never be tempted to stick with draft-powered exhaust fans; Replace them with a more efficient model instead.

When drying clothes indoors, place the dryer next to an open window if possible. You may also consider installing a dehumidifier nearby to remove excess moisture from the air while your clothes dry.

You may need to go to the attic and fix the insulation situation. If it's uneven, it can create cold spots that allow condensation to collect on the ceilings below. And, of course, you need to address any potential external sources of moisture: clean and inspect gutters regularly, and look out for slipped tiles or signs of water damage outside your home.

A household upholstery cleaner is essential, whether it's old-fashioned velvet or the cheapest... - Mashable

The vinegar. sodium bicarbonate. Wash the dishes.

Spot. To play. No not like this.

Talk of how best to remove stains from furniture (without hiring equipment or paying a professional, of course) clearly depends on who you ask. But as much as TikTok cleans or your grandma swears by your home remedies, the most versatile hack for cleaning your own upholstery might end up being getting an actual upholstery cleaning machine.

An upholstery cleaner can be as simple as a vacuum cleaner.

Switching from a spray bottle to an actual upholstery cleaner shouldn't be much more than using a vacuum instead of a broom and dustpan. Constant spraying and drying is not only unnecessary work for you, but can also cause stains to become more noticeable than before.

Homemade cleaning concoctions can work wonders in emergency situations, but they're probably not the most practical for regular spot cleaning. The best ingredients and the right amount of effort to apply depend largely on the size, age, and type of stain, as well as the type of fabric. It often seems that what would have worked for someone on the internet makes the crime scene even worse, like drawing a ring of water along the edges of the buffer zone. Oh, and now your couch smells like dog pee and vinegar.

Commercial cleaning sprays have their own warning labels. Stronger chemicals can lift more brittle materials like suede or canvas too well, leaving discoloration or pilling to the point of no return. Many spray cleaners are sudsy and recommend letting the suds sit for a few minutes, which isn't the safest method for homes with pets or children anyway.

Hand cleaning rarely goes deep enough to affect ingrained stains. This coffee stain from two years ago is perfect as a permanent accent on your comfy couch, thanks for asking.

What is the best upholstery cleaner?

Home upholstery cleaners come in two forms: those that use suction and water, and those that use steam. Your biggest deciding factor will probably be the type of substance you are dealing with. Most upholstered furniture and rugs should come with a label or online manual with washing instructions, often stating if the material can get wet, if moisture needs water or some kind of detergent, or if it needs to be steamed.

Upholstery that is compatible with soapy water can also be damaged if it is completely soaked. A good wet upholstery cleaner should have adjustable moisture control that allows you to adjust the amount of water dispensed. These vacuum-like suction as they clean, both to catch solid debris from the spill and to help the puddle dry.

While ignoring the "hand wash only" or "dry clean only" instructions on clothes still doesn't have drastic consequences, furniture is a much bigger investment. Therefore, fabrics that don't want to get wet at all, such as suede or velvet, should be cleaned accordingly with high temperature and low humidity. Vaporizers still have a water reservoir, but they heat it past its boiling point and force it through the attachment as pressurized vapor. The steam can penetrate the fibers and not only loosen the stain but also kill allergens such as dust mites or odor-causing bacteria, a potential solution to those invisible stains that still stink.

Whether it's a West Elm showpiece, an antique velvet find, or the classic budget option in a gray college dorm, here are the best upholstery cleaners to keep your furniture clean:

10 Common Mistakes People Make With Home Generators - Popular Science

This article originally appeared on BobVila .

After a long power outage at home, the importance of a consistent and reliable power supply can become a priority. For those living in an area that experiences regular storms and inclement weather, they may be part of nearly one-fifth of single-family homes in the United States . You have a home generator.

Proper maintenance of a generator is critical to being sure it will work the next time there is a power outage, but the problem with home generators is that blowing them up is not an option. Learning to maintain and operate a generator is not a snap, as it is all too easy to make mistakes that can damage the equipment or put your safety at risk. Without a careful approach, the consequences can be quite common errors in machine operation and maintenance.

Using the wrong extension cord

To stay safe and avoid an electricity crisis in the dark , read these tips for keeping a home generator operational at all times.

Most generators require a GFCI rated, grounded, outdoor extension cord that is at least 14 gauge. Without this cord, current could flow where it shouldn't, creating hazards such as fire or electrocution. Remember that old cables can be dangerous and that the length of the cable and the amperage of the load also play a key role in the cable's actual carrying capacity. What's the best rule of thumb to keep your generator running safely without blowing a fuse, getting electrocuted, or starting a fire? Always refer to the user manual.

Operate the generator indoors

Starting a generator from the garage or anywhere near the home is not recommended as the exhaust fumes contain deadly carbon monoxide . The ideal place to use a generator is outside in a dry place (to prevent moisture ingress), away from open doors and windows. At least 25 feet is generally safe. Allow at least 5 feet of total clearance for the machine.

If you're using a portable generator that could be kept in the garage, never tempt fate by turning it on there. A stationary generator must also be installed by professionals at a suitable location.

Use of poor quality fuel.

It can be tempting to save a few bucks on cheap fuel instead of premium, but it can damage the unit and cost a lot more in the long run. Problems such as clogged injectors with poor quality gases can encourage the growth of microorganisms and reduce a generator's performance.

If a generator has been idle for a few months, the old gasoline could go bad. To prevent this, run the engine regularly, drain the gas before using a stored generator, or add a fuel stabilizer to keep it fresh.

Improper switching on and off

Most generators follow similar basic steps to safely start and stop a generator. Before starting a generator, connect extension cords. Then add all the loads on the extender. To turn off the generator, disconnect the loads from the cable and then disconnect the cable from the generator. When all cables are disconnected, turn off the generator.

For safety reasons, be sure to follow the user manual on how to turn the generator on and off correctly to avoid damage or fatigue to the device.

Connect to a service panel

Connecting a generator directly to a home's electrical panel or to the emergency power supply can create a very dangerous electrical fire hazard. When power returns, it's possible that residual energy will travel back up the line. Not only could this illegal practice put you at risk, but neighbors and utility workers could also be injured by the high voltage.

Instead, it's best to have a licensed electrician install a manual transfer switch on any portable generator. This switch alternates the power source of the house between the mains and the generator.

Refuel while running

It is important to wait for the generator to cool before adding fuel. Refueling while the generator engine is running, or even when the engine is off but still hot, can cause a fire and explosion. Also, avoid charging a generator when its tank is empty. Fires can start instantly with just a small squirt of fuel near the spark plug or hot exhaust. Therefore always ensure that the generator is switched off and allowed to cool down before charging it again.

Run the Elements builder.

Never operate a generator in wet weather to avoid damage to the inverter or electric shock. Hazards arise when water enters electrical outlets or panels and shorts out the chassis. Generators should be operated at ground level in an open, dry area or under a generator cover (although they will technically work in rain, snow or sleet).

Neglect routine maintenance.

Regular and routine maintenance tasks come with owning the generator as it is quite a complex piece of equipment. Problems can arise over time by not following the manufacturer's recommendations or by fixing minor issues. At best, it can cause booting or sticking issues, and at worst, a total failure of the drive.

Regular maintenance includes checking and cleaning the oil and air filters, checking the batteries and running the generator at least once a month. Generators have to run more frequently during the cold season.

Hire a bad technician

When it comes to home generator maintenance and repairs, technical skills are sometimes required. At some point in your life, you will likely need specific skills and advanced knowledge to install, repair, or maintain your machine. This is where a trained technician comes into play.

It's a good idea to properly verify a technician's expertise and experience by researching them, seeing if they're certified by the Electric Generating Systems Association , asking them questions, and checking their credentials.

Maintain poor or non-existent records.

It is wise to really understand how a home generator is used, maintained and cared for and what the device can do for a home. This includes how much fuel you need, how the electricity is used and when it works. By knowing and keeping an eye on these things, you can ensure a constant amount of gas and generator capacity at all times. Failure to meet the minimums, or not at all, can easily result in wasted fuel or other costly mistakes.

Beginner's Guide to Fall Planting and Care - Behind the Hedges

Spring and summer are perhaps the busiest times of the year for gardeners. However, autumn is also a good time to take care of the garden.

Tree and bare root retailer Bower & Branch says soil temperatures in many parts of the country could still be warm enough to encourage root growth by the onset of winter. Plus, fall is often the perfect time to plant, fertilize, and care for a garden, or start the bounty for next year.

Here are some tips on how to make the most of the fall gardening season.

AUTUMN YEARS

Towards the end of September, start planting cool-weather loving pansies and violets for a pop of color when the summer flowers fade. It's also a good idea to stock up on flower bulbs that will bloom in the next few months before stores sell out. Wait until temperatures are really cool before planting in desired locations for spring shoots.

SAU LETTUCE SEEDS

Lettuce, spinach, radishes, and arugula all tolerate cooler temperatures. Try new and exciting lettuce varieties and enjoy salads well into the fall season.

MAKE THE SUN INVENTORY

Planting a garden carefully means maximizing the hours of sunshine, which begin to dwindle in the fall. Experts say gardens grow best in sunny locations that receive six hours of direct sunlight per day. This is where container gardens can come in handy as they allow gardeners to move plants to places with plenty of sunlight.

FILL GAPS IN THE GARDEN

Certain fall plants can add color to the landscape and brighten homes to increase appeal. In addition to pansies and violets, fall flowers include asters, kale, and chrysanthemums. Remember, moms can come back year after year. So get them out of those pots and plant them in the ground. They can also be enjoyed the following year as they bud in early spring and develop leaves and buds by late summer.

CLEAR UNDESIRABLE GROWTH

Fall is the perfect time to prune back wilted vegetables and remove weeds. Instead of bagging the leaves, snip them off with a grass catcher and then add the mixture to a vegetable garden as an excellent soil insulator. Nitrogen and carbon fertilize the soil, improve growth opportunities and limit weed growth.

propagating plants

As temperatures start to drop, start taking cuttings from perennials, picking azalea and rhododendron seedpods, and sharing hardwood cuttings, says the resource Gardening Know How. Consult a garden center or horticulturist for proper stem propagation methods using rooting hormones and other techniques.

KEEP WATERING

Water is essential in fall and winter as roots can still grow. Gradually reduce watering time when plants are dormant. Fall planting and tending can extend the gardening season and improve your chances of growing a healthy spring garden.

Arbor Products began as an affair of the heart for a mother, a former product and brand developer, and a lifelong search for a "better way" to clean. Unable to find what he was looking for on grocery store and supermarket shelves, he decided to create his own solution using off the shelf cleaning products that really work and are also durable, natural and safe for people, pets and the planet. Arbor launches summer 2022 with a range of home cleaning products, creating new solutions to old cleaning problems, from smarter stain removers to non-toxic ways to combat stubborn odors to sustainably sourced, handcrafted soap bark and hand washing. Arbor products are available exclusively through the arborproducts.com website, where TREEHOUSE Arbor is building a community to redefine cleaning as less painful and more enjoyable.
