A recent Heatmap article explains how network operators can easily cope with the increased loads and feeds they are facing today.

There are more and more electrical devices and vehicles and more energy is required. At the same time, record growth in renewable energy projects using wind and solar power is helping to make that energy available, but there are only so many cables to carry that load from farms to consumers. As a result, network operators in many regions are finding it difficult to build new lines quickly enough and are facing numerous administrative procedures.

New power lines require not only money for construction, but also easements and land purchases for laying the cables, environmental reviews, inspections, engineering approvals, permits and many other things. All of these costs are passed on to clean energy suppliers and customers. This makes the implementation of renewable energy not only slower but also more expensive than it should be.

However, grid operators have started using a different method to move more power without having to worry about all that hassle: they're running better cables along the same poles and towers. This doesn't eliminate all the costs and hassle of obtaining a permit, but it does mean that utilities now only need to apply for a maintenance permit to install new cables, rather than going through the entire process of building new lines alongside existing ones. . lines.

How does it work? Instead of suspending aluminum conductors in heavy steel cables that can warp under heat and stress, cable manufacturers offer conductors with lighter, stronger composite cores. This means that the power line can transport around twice as much energy over the same poles. This results in significantly higher material costs (two to four times more expensive than traditional steel core wire), but the savings in permits and inspections more than offset the cost difference, resulting in a much smaller upgrade overall.

But if grid operators and renewable projects can solve the problems, they will provide more than enough grid growth to make the most of the subsidies introduced under the Inflation Reduction Act. That alone is worth it!

Two overnight stops in Chinatown and Chelsea. One of them, a place called Milk & Hops, came across me when I was searching for "alcohol" just to see if that was an option. According to a note in the app, the gift bag "sometimes contains alcohol." My surprise was not like that.

Friday, February 2nd

A huge, flavorful portion picked up at 4pm from a Middle Eastern eatery in the East Village called Zaad. The sauce was similar to harissa but wasn't extremely spicy. A delicious affair.

Saturday, February 3rd

At this price, perhaps the best deal of the week from Aqua Best Seafood Market on the Lower East Side.

Not only are these parts of the fish full of flavor, but they also have a higher fat content than the fillet, so they won't dry out when cooked. However, most restaurants throw away these pieces because they contain a lot of bones. I am lucky.

The judgment

My biggest complaint? Container. Lots and lots of plastic.

Overall, though, it was a fun and affordable culinary tour of Manhattan. The fact that the app seems to offer more carb options than anything else might give us pause. But the business is growing rapidly and more and more diverse dining options are constantly being created.

Also worth noting: Since I've been running an average of five miles a day to and from eating trips, I may be compensating for all the starchy white carbs this week.

I hold on to that thought as I walk past the scale, pretending it isn't there.

February 22, 2024 : The Wyoming Weed and Pest Council (WWPC) reminds citizens of the Cowboy State to be on the lookout for invasive species with six tips to prevent the spread of unwanted plants and insects. This reminder follows Governor Mark Gordon's announcement that February 26-March 3, 2024 will be recognized as National Invasive Species Awareness Week.

 

The goal of Awareness Week, announced in January, is to share information about invasive species and actions the community can take to protect the environment and themselves, whether by boat, on foot or at a picnic. the park.

"As people head outside this summer, we want them to know that a little prevention goes a long way toward keeping Wyoming wild and beautiful," said WWPC President Donley Darnell. "Invasive insects, noxious weeds and plant diseases cost the United States approximately $40 billion annually in damage to our lakes, forests and farms." They can damage our state's economy, food supply, environment and in some cases even public health endanger.

According to the National Wildlife Federation, invasive species pose a major threat to native wildlife and ecosystems, and nearly 42 percent of endangered or threatened species are at risk due to their spread. Although often unintentional, humans can spread invasive species with anything that moves, such as boots and shoes, tires, boats, firewood, pets, horses, etc.

For outdoor enthusiasts, protecting your favorite natural space from invasive species doesn't take much.

Here are six simple steps you can take to stop the spread of invasive species:

1. Clean your shoes, clothing, backpacks and pets before and after exploring and stay on designated trails.
2. Clean your horse's hooves and feed him certified weed-free hay before your adventure.
3. Clean, drain and dry your boat and fishing gear to deter water hitchhikers .
4. Do not move firewood . Buy it where you burn it and buy certified, heat-treated firewood. If permitted, you can also collect wood on site.
5. Before traveling to new areas, inspect and clean your trailers, ATVs and RVs with water or compressed air to remove mud, plant debris and hidden pests.
