Many people wonder how often they should clean their oven, including in this Reddit thread and this one and this one . Unlike our clothing and bedding , sometimes the answer isn't so obvious when it comes to devices.
Some ovens require more regular cleaning than others, and this largely depends on how often you use the appliance. That's why we turned to an appliance expert to find out how often we should clean our ovens and how we can tackle the task.
Here's everything you need to know about cleaning large appliances.
How often should you clean your oven?
On average, a thorough oven cleaning every two to three months should be enough for regular maintenance, but this can vary from oven to oven.
"Users should clean their oven as often as necessary, especially if there are large spills or visible residue on the floor," says Tetiana Tarandushko, senior kitchen category manager at Miele USA . "This should be done at least every two months."
If you use your oven every day, you may need to clean it twice or even three times as often each year. And while this may not be the most desirable task, it will ultimately help your oven perform better.
"A clean oven definitely works better because there is no residue building up at the bottom and producing smoke," says Tarandushko.

How to clean your oven
One of the easiest ways is to use your oven's self-cleaning function, if it offers it. This feature heats the oven to an extremely high temperature, causing any accumulated or spilled food to turn into ash. Once the cleaning cycle is complete and the oven has completely cooled, you can wipe the ash from the bottom of the oven with a microfiber cloth or sponge and the unit should be as good as new.
"This eliminates the need for laborious cleaning," says Tarandushko. "Miele ovens are well insulated and use high quality materials so that the pyrolysis process can actually be used without damaging surfaces or electronics over time."

Many oven brands offer a self-cleaning feature and this is a great alternative to spending hours manually cleaning debris. However, keep in mind that when using this feature it often takes at least a few hours for the cycle to complete. So be prepared to stay at home during this time.
If your oven doesn't have a self-cleaning feature, there are other ways to keep it sparkling.
"We do not recommend using harsh detergents to clean ovens," says Tarandushko. "These can damage surfaces and contain chemicals that are not food safe, requiring additional steps to remove them before using [the oven] for cooking."
For this reason, a good cleaning method is to use three natural ingredients that you probably already have on hand: baking soda, vinegar, and dish soap. Together, these three ingredients create a paste that you can use to safely clean the inside of your oven. You can find step-by-step instructions here .
How often should you clean your stove?
Your stove requires more maintenance than your oven and should at least be cleaned after each use, as food from pots and pans often splashes and sizzles on the surface. This can be done with a paper towel and an all-purpose cleaner or a microfiber cloth with soap and water.
Most removable parts of your stove, including burner caps and grates, are generally dishwasher safe. And don't forget to clean the knobs and sides of your oven from time to time.
