9 Energy Saving Tips That Heating Companies Would Rather Not Tell You – The Voice

Jessica Hagard

Need energy saving tips to keep your heating bills down this winter? With cooler temperatures ahead, every little kilowatt can help keep your bill down. Let's talk about some of the best strategies you should try.

Use a smart thermostat

If you're tired of constantly fiddling with the thermostat, invest in a smart thermostat. A smart thermostat learns your daily routine (e.g. when you're awake or when you snuggle under the covers) and adjusts the temperature accordingly.

And the best part: you can control it from your phone. So if you get home earlier than expected or plan to stay out longer, you can easily adjust the temperature remotely. Still, it's no surprise that smart, programmable thermostats are essential for strategically heating your home .

Chris Taylor from Scottish Energy Saving has some great tips on how to get the most out of your smart thermostat. "Use the thermostat's learning features for a few weeks and make manual adjustments if necessary. Over time, it learns your preferences," he advises.

Increase the thermal mass of your home

According to Architect Magazine, thermal mass refers to the materials in your home, such as concrete, brick or stone, that can absorb, store and release heat slowly. Imagine your home absorbing heat during the day and gradually releasing it as it cools down at night. This keeps your home naturally comfortable without having to constantly adjust the thermostat.

"Place furniture and curtains so that the sun hits them during the day and absorbs heat. Close the curtains at night to contain the heat and allow the thermal mass to radiate heat into the room," says Taylor. "This will help keep the temperature stable and reduce heating costs."

Trap in the heat

Heat trapping means keeping the heat you generate in your home so it doesn't escape and increase your heating bill. Fortunately, there are many ways to do this.

First, address any issues that could be causing heat loss, such as poor insulation or drafty windows, say Alan Houghton and Gordon Chalk of Next Level Underfloor Heating . "Conduct an energy audit of your home using a candle or incense. Move it around doors, windows, and baseboards, anywhere air can escape. If the smoke oscillates, you have found a draft. Seal these gaps with weatherstripping, caulk, or vent gaskets to keep more heat inside.

"You can also add weatherstripping to the bottom of doors and windows to keep cold air out," they add. Applying these simple solutions can make a big difference in heat retention.

Use your curtains strategically

Strategic use of curtains is a simple but effective way to keep your home warm and cozy without increasing the temperature. Think of your curtains as an additional layer of insulation for your windows, helping to retain heat inside when you need it most.

According to Olga Galenko of Home Alliance, it's a good idea to open your curtains wide during the day to let in as much sunlight as possible. The sun's rays naturally warm your home, especially when they hit areas with high thermal mass such as stone floors or brick walls.

Then, as the sun sets and the temperature drops, close the curtains to prevent heat from escaping. "Thick, insulating curtains can be particularly effective," he adds.

Clean your filters

Over time, the filters in your heating system can become clogged with dust, dirt and other debris. When this happens, your system has to work harder to circulate warm air throughout your home, which not only wears the system out faster but also uses more energy, increasing your costs.

Make a Christmas coffee and motivate yourself to clean or replace your filters at least once a month during peak periods and every three months the rest of the year. If you have underfloor heating, Houghton and Chalk recommends having it checked annually by a professional technician. Of course, it's also a good idea to minimize dust and dirt through regular cleaning and vacuuming .

Close the ventilation slots in rooms that are not or rarely used.

"If you have rooms that you rarely go into, close the vents," says Dan Staupe of Compass Exteriors . By closing the vents in these rooms, you can redirect warm air into the rooms you're actually in, making your heating system more efficient.

Just be careful not to close too many vents at once, as this can cause pressure to build up in your system. But closing off an unused room or two can be a great way to keep cozy things where you need them while reducing your heating bills.

Invest in your ceiling fans

Most people think of ceiling fans as a cooling device in the summer, but they can be just as useful in the winter. "During the winter months, reverse the direction of ceiling fans and run them clockwise at low speed to push warm, ceiling-rising air into the room," recommend Houghton and Chalk.

Improve your insulation

If you have a larger home, consider insulating the basement or attic to increase heat retention. In addition, Taylor recommends using advanced materials such as spray foam or insulation panels, which retain heat better than others.

"Consider installing a heat recovery ventilation (HRV) system when upgrading your HVAC system," he adds. An HRV can counteract poor ventilation by removing heat from the exhaust air and transferring it to the cold supply air. In addition to reducing heating costs, this can also improve indoor air quality.

Turn off your humidifier

Turning off the humidifier may seem counterintuitive, but in certain situations it can help reduce your heating bills. Humidifiers add moisture to the air, which can make it warmer and more comfortable, but they also require energy to operate. If your home already has adequate humidity or you live in a climate where the air is not too dry, running a humidifier may place an unnecessary additional burden on your energy use.

Additionally, during the colder months when your heating system is operating, it can naturally increase indoor humidity, especially in well-insulated homes. If your home is already comfortable, you may not need additional humidity. If you must use one, be sure to clean it thoroughly so it doesn't use extra power.

Avoid a horrendous heating bill with these simple tips

By following these energy saving tips, you'll stay warm this winter and stay in control of your heating bills. Don't let the cold hurt your wallet: try these strategies and enjoy a comfortable home at no extra cost.

5 Skin Care Tips to Treat Rosacea

For years I felt self-conscious about my red cheeks. I didn't understand why my companions had a perfectly even complexion while mine was a brilliant scarlet. In college, I finally took the initiative to find answers to my condition and that's when my dermatologist told me about rosacea.

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterized by redness, visible blood vessels, and even small bumps on the face. However, there is expert advice that can help people manage this condition and mask its effects. Below, I explain what rosacea is and then provide five skin care tips to improve and reduce the appearance of rosacea.

Read more: Is your skin suffering from sun damage? We ask the experts if it can be reversed

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the face, causing persistent redness and visible blood vessels on the face and sometimes other areas of the body. Rosacea is very common, affecting more than 14 million people in the United States alone . Rosacea can affect anyone of any age, gender, race or ethnicity, but is most commonly diagnosed in middle-aged and older adults, fair-skinned people and postmenopausal women.

Rosacea is chronic and incurable, highly treatable and well controlled with over-the-counter products, treatments, medications or surgery. It is important to speak to a dermatologist about a formal diagnosis and treatment plans as the condition can worsen over time if left untreated.

Where does rosacea occur?

Rosacea can occur anywhere on the body , but is primarily found in the following areas:

  • Face, especially nose, chin, cheeks, forehead and eyes.
  • ears
  • Breast
  • neck
  • scalp

What are the signs of rosacea?

Rosacea is usually diagnosed when a chronic rash, persistent redness, and other symptoms appear on the face.

Other signs of rosacea can include:

    Health tips logo
    CNET
  • Redness, especially on the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin.
  • Inflammation and swelling of the face, called edema.
  • Small blood vessels that look like red lines on the skin.
  • A permanent blush
  • Non-painful pustules
  • Bumps and pimples
  • Burning or tingling sensations.
  • Itching, feeling of tightness or dryness.

What can make rosacea worse?

Over time, certain behaviors, treatments, or topical solutions can help mask the redness and make it less visible or even completely unnoticeable.

Certain risk factors can trigger rosacea, worsen its appearance, or worsen symptoms , such as:

  • Prolonged exposure to sunlight (ultraviolet light)
  • Extremely high temperatures
  • Subzero temperatures
  • wind
  • hot baths
  • Intense cardio/physical activity
  • stress
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Smoke
  • spicy food
  • Hot food and drinks.

Tips for improving and reducing the appearance of rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic disease, meaning symptoms can fluctuate unexpectedly. In the event of an outbreak, the following methods of treatment or camouflage exist:

1. Choose the right skin care products

You probably wash your face twice a day and that's exactly what your dermatologist wants you to do. Rosacea is an additional obstacle because your skin is more sensitive. When developing a daily skin care routine, it is important to use rosacea-friendly products.

It is recommended to avoid products such as toners and astringents that contain harsh ingredients including:

  • alcohol
  • Glycolic acid
  • lactic acid
  • Fighter
  • Fragrance
  • menthol
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (commonly found in shampoos and toothpastes)
  • urea

Here's what you should use to soothe inflamed skin and prevent irritation:

  • Fragrance-free topical products
  • Gentle cleaning products
  • A daily broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher
  • Products with soothing ingredients like niacinamide, green tea extract, aloe vera, bitters, tormentilla and licorice root extract.
  • Sensitive skin and non-comedogenic products.

Remember that it's important to test any new product on a patch of skin on your hand or arm first, then introduce it little by little to see how your skin reacts. If you notice irritation or worsening of rosacea symptoms, stop use immediately.

2. Take medication

Oral and topical medications may be prescribed to treat redness, inflammation, bumps, and pimples caused by rosacea. Here are some of the most common over-the-counter rosacea treatments :

  • Antibiotics such as doxycycline (oral)
  • Brimonidine (topical gel)
  • Topical creams or gels containing azelaic acid, ivermectin, or metronidazole.
  • Acne medications such as isotretinoin (oral)

These medications may require a prescription from your doctor. If you have insurance, your copay may be as low as $7, but the medication would cost more than $120 without insurance. There are simple over-the-counter products, like those mentioned in the previous section, that can treat rosacea and only cost between $5 and $50 on average, depending on which product you purchase.

3. Laser treatment

In more severe cases, your dermatologist or healthcare professional may use lasers to remove visible blood vessels and limit the amount of skin redness.

There are different types of laser treatments, such as pulsed dye lasers, CO2 lasers, and Erbium-YAG lasers, but in general, lasers work by converting light energy into heat energy to selectively target and penetrate blood vessels while maintaining the safety of surrounding skin to preserve. . Ablative lasers, such as CO2 lasers, can reshape areas of the face that have been scarred or enlarged by tissue inflamed by rosacea.

These treatments can be very effective. According to the American Academy of Dermatologists, lasers used to treat visible blood vessels produce excellent results: Between 50 and 75 percent of people who have undergone treatment experience noticeable relief from their symptoms after one to three treatments. Light therapies are expensive and can cost between $500 and $700.

4. Cleanse your skin properly

Preventing rosacea flare-ups isn't just about avoiding certain skin care products. It also depends on how you clean your skin. Here are some dermatologist-recommended tips to rid your skin of rosacea:

  • Cleanse your face twice a day every day.
  • If you are taking medication to treat rosacea, apply it first and then apply a moisturizer suitable for rosacea.
  • Do not use a facial washcloth or sponge to clean your skin. Just use your fingers
  • Avoid rubbing, scrubbing or massaging the skin.
  • Stop exfoliating
  • After washing, pat your face gently with a clean cotton towel.

5. Use green-tinted makeup

In minor cases, a green concealer or cream can hide redness or visible blood vessels on the face. Thanks to color theory it works. Green and red are complementary colors, meaning they are opposite each other on the color wheel and cancel each other out when mixed. When green makeup is applied to red skin, the green absorbs the red, neutralizing the red pigments. Some products, like L'Oréal Paris Makeup's BB Cream Tinted Moisturizer Magic Skin Beautifier , have received thousands of reviews praising their effectiveness in hiding the signs of rosacea.

Some makeup products can irritate sensitive skin. Therefore, always do a patch test before applying the product to the face and neck. For more sensitive or irritated skin, dermatologists also recommend water-based or powder makeup.

Incorporating these tips into your skin care routine will help you better manage and care for your rosacea-prone skin. Before trying any of these tips or products, it is best to consult your dermatologist as every skin type is different and your doctor knows your skin best.

Hire entrepreneurs after Hélène? Advice from a pro on how to deal with it.

As communities across Western North Carolina clean up their homes and businesses, residents are eyeing a massive rebuilding effort. BPR's Gerard Albert III spoke with Megan Carroll, executive director of the Blue Ridge Mountain Builders Association.

Their conversation, edited for clarity and brevity, is included below.

Albert: Many communities are now moving from rescue mode to recovery mode. When rebuilding, what should people pay attention to when someone contacts them about repair work?

Carroll: "The first thing I would recommend to anyone who finds themselves in this situation would be to take lots of photos. Contact your insurance company, talk to them. And then maybe I would suggest thinking about how the person approaches you...

"I would be wary of seeing out-of-state license plates and phone numbers on the page of out-of-state vehicles. I would be wary of people coming to you with things that seem too good to be true.

"If this person doesn't look like anyone you've ever seen or met, and he also asks you for the advance payment before doing the work, I would be very careful about giving him anything, so so be it."

Albert: Are there ways for people to contact the association to verify an individual or even get recommendations for contractors in their area?

Carroll: "To be a licensed GC (general contractor) in this state, you must pass an exam, meet certain requirements, have a certain level of knowledge and earn continuing education credits. These things keep them informed. They keep them updated on code changes and things like that.

"Licensed GCs have a number and should display it.

"We have a list of these people online ."

Albert: What should people trust when an entrepreneur approaches them or when they contact an entrepreneur?

Carroll: "The fact that you can find them online, that they may have a website that you can see, that you can see a license number, that you can see some of their customer reviews."

"They will make you an offer. They will talk to you about this process. They will tell you about a schedule.

Albert: What can people cleaning their homes and businesses do to stay safe?

Carroll: "Handwashing is a very difficult task. So remember to cover yourself with gloves and wear breathable clothing. But remember, there is a reason this is a job.

"People are being trained to intervene and solve some of these problems. So talk to your insurance company again, decide on the way forward and then determine the next professional you need to hire. They can make recommendations, help you with cleaning and removal, and guide you through the process.

I suffer from chronic pain and my best heating pad is on sale | Houses and gardens

I suffer from severe chronic pain due to several illnesses, and despite the strong medications I take daily, there is one item in my house that does an excellent job of relieving my pain, especially in cold weather: my electric heating pad.

I have one plugged in in the living room, another in my office and a third next to my bed. I use it on my stomach for my severe endometriosis and to relieve pain from dislocations that I live with daily due to Ehlers-Danlos hypermobility, a connective tissue disorder.

There are plenty of electric heating pads on sale for Amazon Prime Day, which is now reaching its final day . So here's what I've learned about choosing the best heating pads after buying at least 30 of them over the last 15 years, including my favorite on sale during Amazon's Big Deal Days event.

What to look for in a great electric heating pad

Because I keep heating pads in various places around the house (and also in the office before I work from home), I have purchased at least 30 of them over the last 15 years. All of my electric heating pads come from Amazon and I have learned a lot about what makes a good heating pad.

Firstly, versatility. You want to choose one that has at least six heat settings. Everyone's pain and heat threshold is different and may change over time or weather. Therefore, do not opt for a three-stage threshold. You will simply limit yourself.

Next, make sure it has an auto shut-off feature for added safety and timer options that allow for rides of at least 120 minutes to keep you comfortable for as long as possible. I notice that when I have a heating pad with a shorter maximum run time, it turns off quickly, I'm busy working or relaxing, and my pain increases in the background without me knowing why - the heat is gone

The good news is that they usually heat up pretty quickly, in about five minutes.

My favorite model of electric heating pad is currently on sale for Amazon Prime Day and if I ever need a new one, this model is the first one I look for in the sales.

Electric heating pads are a great addition to your winter toolkit, allowing you to worry less about keeping your home warm all day and simply keeping the area where you sit warm.

Other things to know about heating pads from my many years of use are that while some of them are available for under $15, they tend not to get as hot as you'd like and the plug may or may not break within six months works more. . You get what you pay for and I usually buy heating pads for $25-$35 and they last.

With the design chosen above, in my experience they generally work fine for at least 18 months to two years, and that means I use them 6 to 12 hours a day between September and May, and intermittently from June onwards. August. It's used a lot more than the average person, so your device will likely run smoothly for at least a few years.

Plus, they're economical to run and I've never experienced a major change in my energy bill. There are other ways to reduce your heating costs . So don't skimp on the comfort that a good heating pad offers.

Just follow the cleaning tips you can find online on the subject. Although some come off their cords and are washed, I would never recommend them because I know people who have bought washable ones and still ended up breaking theirs in the washing machine.

Instead, I use a damp cloth with some Dawn dish soap, available in a handy multipack on Amazon , and wipe down the areas needed. Then I turn it on and it dries itself. Never clean your heating pad with a damp cloth.

Who else are electric heating pads suitable for?

Although I suffer from chronic pain, heating pads are also great for people who are very cold, those who want to reduce their energy costs this winter, anyone who suffers from muscle or menstrual cramps or other body pain. They are also great for providing warmth in your home without heating up the entire house.

The only time I notice my heating pad not working is when I have a very active injury to my Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, such as a new dislocation or a partial dislocation where I use ice for the first 48 hours to reduce the swelling.

Honestly, given the amount of pain I'm in, I can't get through the winter or even most of the year without my heating pads in the house.

Other things to have at home for body pain

Whether you need it at home or carry it with you, these are the other heat or ice therapy products I recommend.

Then learn about maintenance tasks that will reduce your energy costs and how to set up a room to maximize heat .

How to make the most of the space on your dressing table | Houses and gardens

A cluttered dresser can cause prepping to become messy and disorganized. With limited space and a variety of products, it can be easy to lose the essentials.

However, our professional home organizers reveal their favorite smart storage solutions in the Amazon Big Deal Day Sale that will transform your vanity into a functional, well-organized space and make your everyday life a breeze.

Here's handy tips for organizing a bathroom vanity, from clever drawer dividers to space-saving trays, all on sale at great Amazon deals.

This way you can make optimal use of the space on your dresser

Neglecting cosmetic organizers is one of the biggest bathroom organization mistakes that leads to a chaotic morning routine and a non-relaxed evening routine. Not to mention, it can also make cleaning the bathroom difficult.

According to our experts, these are the organizers worth buying on sale to bring order to the clutter magnet.

1. Collapsible storage

"To get the most out of your vanity, you need to declutter your bathroom and get rid of items you don't like or use," begins Ben Soreff, professional organizer and owner of House to Home Organizing .

"The first step is to take everything out, categorize it and review it. Most people tend to have small bathrooms without much storage space. Consider storing any extra toiletries and medical supplies in the linen closet.

But "throwing everything in the trash is disorganized and can lead to regret and anxiety," he adds. "Focus on the price and the difficulty of getting it back. All those hotel samples and dirty cotton balls add up. Baskets and bins may not solve your problems, they just make the bathroom look tidy. Focus on the action. How often should I use these toiletries? Are they daily? Configure your products based on frequency of use.'

All prices are valid at the time of publication.

2. Counter drawers

To get the most out of your bathroom vanity ideas , you need to use them. This also includes the meter, but in moderation.

Barbara Brock, professional organizer at Barbara Brock Inc., says, " Keep 75 percent of your vanity top clear." For large vanity tops, place a tray on the countertop to store necessary items: makeup, teeth cleaning products, vitamins, Kleenex, etc . Hair products, toiletries, wellness items or make-up are usually what we put on the dressing table. . Most of our bottles, lotions and potions fit easily on narrow shelves when there is no space in a drawer.

"When I see a dresser full of potions, lotions and cosmetics. I recommend this visually appealing cosmetic organizer with drawers to collect items in an organized manner. The drawers help maximize efficiency and the clear acrylic is durable and easy to clean.']

Punteha van Terheyden, editor-in-chief of H&G, discovered that a tier organizer from Amazon had transformed her dressing table .

3. Store similar items together in the same container or room.

The best tip home organization experts give over and over again is to group similar items together. This not only makes finding objects easier, but also ensures that objects of the same size are placed in the same containers.

Home organizer Barbara Brock says, "The goal is to keep the sink area organized and clean. When everything has its place, it is easier to maintain order and cleanliness. The best way to manage your space is to group similar items together. in other words, categorize them.

"Categorization shows you what you have or don't have and what is important to you. Grouping items allows you to see what type of storage you need and makes it easier to see which product you need to purchase to store your items. The benefit is that it's easier to keep your dresser clean when you and everyone in the house know where to put an item.

But Ben Soreff, professional organizer, adds, "Quantity determines the category." If you only have one hair clip, don't create a separate category for hair. I recommend breaking down products by family member only if there really is no overlap between products.

"We want items to come and go easily," he continues. "There is a difference between the location of things and their location. If everything is lined up but stuck tight, you just can't get to it. When it comes to storage solutions, it's all about ease of use. Depending on the category, clear plastic containers work well for most bathroom storage options. Take out all the trash and return it when you're done.

4. Add sliding drawers to cabinets

We are often happy when we have storage space because that means a lot of hidden storage space. However, without good storage solutions, items often get lost or tipped over when trying to organize the bathroom vanity , leading to frustration.

Organizer Ben Soreff suggests: "Some people have very deep cupboards in the bathroom, but this can be difficult. Anything that lies behind and is difficult to reach might as well not exist. The sliding drawers work well. Wherever possible, we like to use drawers for bathroom storage to make it easier to use. The more containers you accumulate, the more problems you expose yourself to.

5. Have a trash can nearby

One thing that most organized people have in the bathroom is a trash can. While this isn't a simple cosmetic organizer, it helps make the most of your vanity space by ensuring empty containers and skin care products go straight to the bin instead of ending up in the bins or on the counter. explains Barbara. Brock, organizer.

"Always place a trash can in or near the vanity," he says.

Whether you're organizing a family bathroom for quieter routines or creating a home spa, organizing your vanity is the best place to start.
