How to Make Your Own Fruit and Vegetable Wash - Taste of Home

Learn how to wash fruits and vegetables yourself for the cleanest, pesticide-free produce in town.

If you've ever pulled out a celery stalk and found a dead spider curled up in the dirt, you're probably still on the mend like me. Did a cold water rinse really remove all spider residue? Use a homemade fruit and veg wash so you never have to check your chicken noodle soup stock for bugs again.

While it may be easy to get cleaning products for every part of your home, using homemade natural cleaning supplies is a lot cheaper and a lot less of a burden on your health. The same goes for something as simple as washing fruits and vegetables. Of course, food cleaner spray bottles don't have the same contents as window cleaner spray bottles, but they still contain untested chemicals that aren't recommended by the FDA .

Natural products contain fewer (if any) dangerous chemicals that can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs. They also cause less damage to the environment. Oh, and they take up a lot less space under the sink too. Without further ado, let's put together a fruit and vegetable cleaner that's safe to use and effective at removing dirt and pesticides.

  • If rubbing fruit or vegetables with your hands isn't enough, gently scrape away any dirt or waxy residue with a soft-bristled brush. This is very useful when cleaning products that are part of the dirty dozen .
