Kathryn McKenzie, Green Room: Cleaning crowdsourcing 'literati deals

Some of you may remember that a few weeks ago, I had to pick up a short article in the column on the website Litterati.org, a global community of people who refuse and to include after pictures of him in an effort to others.

Now scientists only a record - for more than 100,000 pieces of debris collected in 50 countries worldwide.

This is an excellent example of how a simple idea can make a big difference.

Not only that, scientists jumps in training in a big way with the available education programs to encourage children not only to collect and dispose of waste properly, but the data that can help to alleviate analyze the impact.

Founder Jeff Kirschner says it all started when I was in the hills of Oakland with his family, and his 4-year-old daughter, she realized that someone had thrown a litter bath in a stream about two years ago.

"She said," Daddy, do not go there, "says Kirschner." It was time to open your eyes. "

He also told his days as a child to summer camp where consultants have all said go collect cleaned of dirt before the arrival of the parents of five pieces.

It was "cleaning crowdsourcing" as Kirschner said, though of course not what era called. These ideas, plus a high-tech touches, gave birth to scholars.

As I mentioned before, it is easy to become a member of the literati. All you need is a smartphone or tablet and Instagram application.

You can waste (not hard to do, unfortunately) and then you will find a picture of him with Instagram with the hashtag #litterati. This poster immediately scholars Digital Landfill, a photo gallery on your website, and gives a geotag and time, which show that waste and when it was photographed. Next you will be responsible by recycling waste composting, or check out.

What this means, Kirschner said is that the data are collected from a large amount of waste. New trends it will be easier to identify the source and to prevent the object of similar waste in the future, is working with cities or with companies to address the problem.

"We (data entry), easier, faster, easier and more completely," Kirschner said. For scholars and view a map of the world, garbage collection, and information on the type and quantity. On the other hand, as expected, the plastic is by far the most abundant litter, more than twice as likely as paper products.

There is also a Facebook page and Scientists (www.facebook.com/litterati) using the "Pick of the Day" and other topics of interest.

Oakland resident who is currently working with many schools, including Monterey County. Writers was included also accepted by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the various workshops Kirschner, most recently at the summit of plastic pollution, a program for teachers who want to go into depth on this topic with their classes. If you are an educator who cares about what might have authors, support@litterati.org email.

Kirschner is expected to speak in this area in about two weeks; I will let you know the details as they become available.

Why do people get involved? As explained Kirschner, so that the experience of the social and shareable waste is produced, is important because it is on. See help people realize that they are not alone in their desire to cleanse the earth.

"This shows that we can make a difference. And that gives us hope," he said.
