Tips for coping with flood losses after this weekend's storm - ABC7 New York

WOODSIDE, Queens (WABC) -- Areas in all three states are drying up from this weekend's storms, with many grappling with flooded basements or wrecked cars from flooding.

For those wondering what to do next, 7 On Your Side's Nina Pineda will help answer those questions.

Flood water inundated the Radi family's basement in Woodside, Queens, on Sunday night, destroying the drywall and their water heater.

The residents of Saad Radi on 48th Street are also cleaning up and trying to dry off on Monday.

"There was a lot of dirt from the street, so there's a lot of mud under the furniture," said Nancy Valero, a Queens resident.

Nancy Valero had to move with her whole family. They blame clogged sewers for black sludge being pushed into basement apartments.

"I need help to start the city," said Afsa Rulalam, a flood victim in Queens. "Every year we suffer."

Rulalam has home insurance but is unsure if he has flood insurance.

Basement flooding is typically not covered by most home insurance policies. If your sump pump fails, you may be eligible for a claim under your policy.

Basement damage is usually only covered if you have flood insurance, but there are exceptions.

United Public Adjusters was in Forest Hills where companies were rehabilitating basements.

It's also important to check your auto insurance policy. Heavy rain grounded motorists on the Long Island Expressway and flooded many cars on the Cross Island Expressway.

If you think there is water in your engine and you still haven't gotten your car back, don't try to start it.

First assess the damage. If there was water on the floor, you probably need to file a claim.

Comprehensive coverage that normally covers your car against fire or theft will cover flood damage.

Always air out your water damaged car. Open doors and windows and start cleaning. The longer the car, the greater the damage.

If driving is not an option, most policies offer rental car insurance. But you have to ask.

There are tons of damaged trees in the area. A 100-foot log collapsed in Rivervale, New Jersey.

Trees that are downed in a storm are not insured unless they strike an insured structure such as your home, garage or shed.

If your neighbor's tree hits your house, your own insurance will cover it. If your tree falls on your neighbor's house, you'll have to file your own landlord lawsuit.

It is important to take photos and video of anything that is a potential loss.

Submit it along with your insurance claim along with a receipt showing the amount you paid for the lost items.

If you don't have receipts, check your credit card statements or online purchase history. You could use it as a voucher to prove the amount of your losses.
