How to Clean Your Dishwasher Filter - Consumer Reports

Self-cleaning filters are just that: filters that capture food particles and direct them into the dishwasher so they rarely require your attention. To determine if this is your type, look inside the dishwasher for a plastic basket or a series of holes in the bottom of the machine that cover the filter, like in the photo below.

Some self-cleaning filters are equipped with a grinder that pulverizes food to make cleaning easier. However, our testing found that they tend to be loud. However, good insulation can dampen the noise of a dishwasher, which is why some dishwashers equipped with such a self-cleaning filter still perform well in our noise tests.

To solve the noise problem, many self-cleaning filters now feature an ultra-fine screen instead of a grinder. As water penetrates, the food is passed through the filter and broken down into small particles that flow out with the remaining rinse water. This type of quieter self-cleaning filter is sometimes found in some more expensive dishwashers.

If you have a self-cleaning filter and notice that your dishwasher isn't cleaning as well as it used to, there may be a problem with the filter. Since you cannot remove the self-cleaning filters, you will need to consult your owner's manual to diagnose the problem and possibly call a repair service to correct the problem.
