Moss is a problem for many homeowners because it is difficult to remove and easily grows back on patios .
This unsightly growth thrives in warm, humid environments and can quickly grow out of control if not treated in a timely manner.
To remedy the situation, Aaron Christensen, the cleaning expert at Homeaglow , shared his top tips.
Ideally, he recommends households maintain their patio by sweeping up any mulch, leaves or loose soil that can cause moss growth.
Or if your home sees new moss, use a stiff-bristled brush to remove it before it becomes a problem and save a day of cleaning effort.
However, if you're a little further away and need to do more than just sweep, Aaron recommends trying boiling water and dish soap first.
He said: "Boiling water and washing up liquid are a gentle, environmentally friendly combination for removing scum. »
To do this, pour boiling water with a little dishwashing liquid onto the terrace and scrub with a hard broom.
The expert added: "The combination of soap and water should create enough lubrication to remove any layer of moss on your deck. »
Another "great option" that the cleaner "loves" is using a steam cleaner on the patio.
Aaron said: "It's environmentally friendly and simply uses the high temperatures of the steam to kill moss on the patio. »
However, when using this technique, it is important to remember that moss loves moisture. Therefore, it is important to dry the deck when you are finished.
Otherwise, it is worth leaving the terrace cleaning (if possible) to a nice, sunny day, as this will dry the surface well and do some of the work for you.
While Aaron argued that "the most effective approach" is to use bleach, bleach is actually toxic to you, your yard and your pets.
If the above methods do not seem to work, bleach should be used as a last resort. The "best way" to use it is to mix it with 10 parts water and spray on the moss-covered area.
After spraying, leave it on for 15 minutes before scrubbing with a stiff-bristled brush and washing off with clean water.
