Why You Should Ignore TikTok's Tide Pod Cleaning Trend: Better Homes and Gardens

It's no secret that not all TikTok cleaning trends actually work. And unfortunately, there's another viral cleaning hack that could ruin your furniture. Popular TikTok videos talk about cleaning sofas, headboards, and other upholstery with detergent pods.

While this trend isn't dangerous like the Tide Pod challenge videos of the 2010s, it's still unnecessary. And it can cause lasting damage to your upholstered furniture , not to mention skin irritation and respiratory problems.

If you haven't seen the viral videos with the hashtag #cleantok, we're going to break them down. Read on to learn what it means, why it's not worth trying, and how you can better keep your upholstered furniture clean.

What is the trend in Tide pod cleaning?

As the name suggests, the technique involves cleaning furniture using laundry pods. In the viral videos, the creators place a pod in a container and pour boiling water directly over it so that it begins to dissolve. Then take a cleaning rag or kitchen towel, wrap it tightly around the lid of a small pot and dip the flat side into the soap solution.

Next, the creators of the video clean their fabric furniture using the fabric-covered pot lid. The immediate effects seem impressive as visible blemishes and blemishes seem to magically disappear. And designers often add that their sofas smell divine once they're finished. But in reality, the consequences are short-lived and result in permanent damage to the furniture and your family, especially your pets!

Why is the Tide Pod Cleaning Trend a Bad Idea?

If you read the comments on these videos, you'll notice that many viewers are skeptical about the cleaning technique or completely disappointed with the results after trying it at home. And while many other people have said this tip works wonders, it's a quick fix that will actually damage your furniture over time. There are two main reasons why we don't recommend trying this trend.

1. Causes premature wear of furniture

Viral TikTok videos are attractive because you can see spots and dirt disappear. But instant gratification doesn't justify long-term wear and tear. Because the makeshift cleaning tool is soaked in water and a strong chemical, rubbing it firmly on the fabric can cause pilling. Worse still, moisture can penetrate the fibers and cause mold to form. Before you know it, your furniture could suffer irreparable damage. As anyone who has ever bought a sofa knows, sofas are an investment , so shortening their lifespan is not a wise decision.

2. Causes skin irritation.

Laundry capsules are highly concentrated and suitable for washing the clothes of an entire family. Therefore, using an entire capsule on a single piece of furniture leaves quite a bit of chemical residue all over the surface. You, your children, your guests and possibly your pets sit or lie on the same surface. This is particularly harmful to people with skin sensitivities or allergies. This can lead to rashes, dermatitis, or other problems over time. Additionally, the lingering smell can irritate a person's respiratory system or cause headaches in those who are sensitive to strong odors.

Best Ways to Clean Upholstered Furniture

Now that you know the potential risks associated with using Tide Pods on upholstered furniture, it's wiser to err on the side of caution and skip the trick altogether. If your sofa desperately needs a thorough cleaning, there are alternative, safer ways to do it.

If you've already tried the wash pod method, TikTok commenters recommend vacuuming the entire surface with a vacuum or carpet vacuum . This will help absorb any remaining moisture and detergent residue.

However, the ideal is to skip the modules and go straight to one of the following methods for cleaning furniture. Always check the cleaning instructions (there are four in total) or the manufacturer before trying anything on new furniture. A potentially easier solution is to simply remove the sofa cushion covers (if available) and wash them separately.

How to clean microfiber or cotton

The first step is to remove as much pet hair, dirt, or crumbs as possible with a vacuum cleaner. Then, depending on the manufacturer's label, you can treat the stains by rubbing them with a mixture of water and mild dish soap, isopropyl alcohol, or a cleaner specifically made for upholstered furniture.

How to clean velvet

This velvet furniture cleaning process is not much different than microfiber cleaning. However, keep in mind that you must be very careful when vacuuming so as not to damage the more delicate velvet. Treat stains as quickly as possible with a little soapy water and a soft cloth in one direction. You can also steam the fabric to smooth the fabric, or use a brush to remove lint and dirt to reduce the frequency of vacuuming.

How to clean clothes

As with velvet, it's best to use a light touch when treating linen furniture. Mix small amounts of clear dish soap, baking soda, and white vinegar to form a paste. Gently rub the dirty areas, let the mixture work for a moment and then vacuum completely.

How to clean polyester

Depending on the label, you can use a commercial cleaner made for polyester or make a homemade solution using warm water, mild detergent, and white vinegar. After cleaning dirty areas, smooth the fabric with a soft-bristled brush.

How to clean wool

Although wool lining is quite durable, it is recommended to clean it with water only. First, run a vacuum cleaner or hood over the fabric, then rub the stains in a circular motion using a microfiber cloth dampened with warm water.

How to clean the caterpillar

Chenille is delicate because it can absorb moisture more quickly than other materials. Therefore, it is important to treat spills immediately by soaking them up with a dry towel and applying spot treatment if necessary, emphasizing that they are safe for use on the track. Do not leave it on longer than directed before drying the cleaner.

Important considerations:

  • Type of task :

    • Heavy-duty tasks like cleaning commercial spaces, removing paint, or deep cleaning surfaces benefit from the powerful performance of gas pressure washers.
  • Portability :
    • Electric pressure washers are generally lighter and easier to move. Ideal if you are cleaning multiple areas.
    • Gas pressure washers may be heavier, but they are more versatile because they do not require a nearby power source.
  • Costs and maintenance :
    • Electric models are usually cheaper, but may not last as long if used frequently.
    • Gasoline models may be more expensive, but their durability and performance can add value to businesses that require regular, intensive cleaning.

Information for employers and employees :

  • Always read the instruction manual before using a pressure washer. It contributes to the longevity of the device and ensures safety.

What to look for when buying a pressure washer

The best pressure washer should have enough power to clean surfaces without damaging them. Compact, lightweight machines are preferable if your work requires mobility. Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

  • PSI: Pounds per square inch (PSI) are commonly used to measure the pressure of gases or liquids. The higher the PSI, the higher the water pressure when cleaning. Make sure the PSI matches the surface you want to clean as too high a PSI can damage the surface. The best commercial pressure washer has a PSI of over 2800 for intensive cleaning.
  • Performance: The power generated by the high-pressure cleaner is equally important. The easiest way to figure this out is to multiply gallons per minute (GPM) by PSI to find purification units (CU). The more CUs, the more powerful the machine.
  • Nozzles: Most pressure washers come with three or four nozzle tips. Nozzles typically range from zero degrees, to project a direct stream of water, to 65 degrees, using a larger orifice to slow speed and increase hose pressure. The larger the nozzle area, the more powerful the jet.
  • Portability: Compact and lightweight pressure washers are easier to transport. Some washing machines have an integrated wheel system for added maneuverability.
  • Hot vs. Cold Water: Cold water presses are generally cheaper and less complicated to use than hot water presses. On the other hand, hot water equivalents require less soap and water for cleaning and can also be used to disinfect surfaces.

8 Sustainable Cleaning Hacks I Recommend as a Home Editor: HELLO! review

I am the first to know that I am much more environmentally friendly and environmentally friendly , but as I thought and thought, for years there have been durable goods that I use in everyday life and in my life, I thought that I will do this. the kindness of sharing...

1. Old toothbrushes for cleaning grout lines

Toothbrushes
Put your old toothbrushes to good use

Something I inherited from my mother's cleaning routine: When I replace my toothbrush, I stick with the old one to clean the grout on the bathroom tiles. Just make sure you save it somewhere else or label it so you don't mix it up with the new one!

2. Lemons absorb refrigerator odors

I love having lemons on hand in the kitchen – great for drinking, cooking and cleaning! If I use a few slices, I leave the other half uncovered in the fridge to absorb odors. I also use it as a scrubber for cutting boards and my sink.

3. Vinegar for cleaning windows

A simple and very inexpensive bottle of vinegar has many uses around the house and I like to rub it with a cloth to clean the inside of the windows. Another tip: I then apply peppermint oil to the window sills, which helps against the smell of vinegar and also keeps the spiders away.

4. Baking soda to clean clogs

A pinch of baking soda and a little vinegar will clean your sink and shower drains, and the resulting fizz is very satisfying.

5. Lemons to clean your microwave

I saw this trick on TikTok and thought I'd give it a try. Chop some lemons and add them to a container of water. Then you put it in the microwave and turn it on for about two minutes (some people recommend a longer time, but I found it lasted long enough on high). The lemon steam breaks down the grease and dirt in the microwave and you can then simply clean it with a cloth.

6. Baby oil for cleaning stainless steel

One of my most successful cleans might be the baby oil and stainless steel trick – hear me out! In fact, this is another gem that I inherited from my mother. A few drops of oil on a cotton pad perfectly removes stains from your metal. I use it on my oven, my ceramic hob and my extractor hood.

Over the last few years of owning my own home, I have used some reusable cleaning products; I particularly like the brands Kit & Kin and Method . The concentrate method is great because a small amount goes a long way when mixed with water!

Timeless Tips for Extending the Life of Cut Flowers in Vases | State University, Pennsylvania

As the late summer heat envelopes us, the lure of freshly cut flowers from the garden lures us into the house. Whether it's bright zinnias, airy baskets, gorgeous sunflowers or elegant snapdragons, we all strive for their beauty to last longer when they adorn our vases. Rooted Farmstead invites you to discover these general tips that can help you get the most out of every cut flower in a vase and bring the magic of nature into your living spaces.

Time is everything

• Harvest at the right stage: For optimal vase life, cut flowers when they are fully developed but not quite ripe. Flowers that are too young may not open fully, while flowers that are too mature may wilt quickly.

• Choose wisely: Choose flowers with strong stems and bright, flawless petals. Avoid flowers that show signs of damage or wilting at harvest time.

ª Use sharp tools: Always use clean, sharp secateurs or scissors to achieve a clean cut. Dull leaves can crush the stems, preventing water absorption.

• Angle matters: Cut stems at a 45-degree angle to create a cool surface and better water absorption.

• Immediate Placement: Immediately after cutting, place flowers in a bucket of warm water to condition them. Let them sit for a few hours to moisturize before placing them in a vase.

• Remove leaves: Remove leaves that may be submerged in water to prevent bacterial growth and keep the water clean.

Caring for the vase and water.

• Empty vase: Use a clean vase and fill it with cold and warm water. Add a floral preservative to the water, if available, to nourish the flowers.

• Deep watering: Make sure the vase is filled with enough water to submerge at least half the length of the stem. Check the water level daily and refill if necessary.

• Change the water: Change the water and cut the stems again every one to two days. This kills bacteria and allows the flowers to absorb fresh nutrients.

Ideal location

• Avoid direct sunlight: Although flowers require light, direct sunlight can accelerate wilting. Place the vase in a location with bright, indirect light to ensure long-lasting freshness.

• Avoid drafts: Keep flowers away from vents, fans or open windows as drafts can cause drying out and shorten the life of the vase.

• Cool and comfortable: Maintain a comfortable room temperature (around 20°C to 22°C) so that the flowers can thrive longer.

normal size

• Prune dead flowers: Remove flowers that begin to wilt to prevent the buildup of ethylene gas, which can accelerate the aging of other flowers.

• Cut stems: Every few days, cut stems about 1 inch from the ground at a 45-degree angle. This helps maintain water absorption capacity.

With these timeless tips you can ensure that your favorite cut flowers (zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers or snapdragons) from your garden or from our own flower farm will permanently decorate your vases.

Can you trust the health information you read online? - Consumer Reports

Casual users: People should be careful when using medical information from social media and online forums, says Mehrotra. Comments published in these locations may appear authoritative even if the authors have no medical training or experience.

Product sellers: You should also be skeptical of anything that appears to be recommending a product that might treat your condition, says Nosal, including targeted ads that often appear after a search. "More than one patient has suffered liver failure due to nutritional supplements ," he says, which is often found on the Internet.

Counter-intuitive note: If you notice something that contradicts official guidelines, such as the idea that usual treatment is dangerous, Nosal recommends speaking to your doctor. "Let's look together," he said.

Artificial intelligence (AI)-generated answers: Recent research shows that systems like ChatGPT, which are sometimes used to answer search queries, appear to be more accurate than symptom checkers , says Mehrotra. But they can also be wrong and sometimes even "hallucinate" or generate false but scientific-sounding information.

Repair a chip on your granite countertop with this clever tip – House Digest

To repair a chip, get a cleaner suitable for granite (and a bowl of soap, water, a microfiber cloth, and a clean water rinse), tape, superglue or clear epoxy , a razor blade, and fine-grit sandpaper. Clean and dry the area, then place tape around the chip to make it easier to find, such as by blocking off the affected area. Fill the chip with epoxy or glue until it is flush with the countertop surface and allow to dry for 24 hours (or longer, depending on the epoxy curing instructions). If excess glue bubbles onto the work surface, scrape it off with a utility knife and then gently sand the area with fine sandpaper to smooth it out. Remove dust from sandpaper.

Alternatively, if your countertop is a darker color, a clear sealer will show through. Using a diamond-tipped drill, drill in an inconspicuous area (such as under the counter) to collect a teaspoon of granite dust. Mix it with the glue and continue as above.

Another option is to use a repair kit called Light Cure Acrylic , a food-safe and non-toxic option. After cleaning the surface and filling it with the included acrylic syringe, place a curing strip over the area and then cure the area for five to seven minutes using an included blue LED light. Remove the curing strip, then sand and polish.
