Sooke Elementary "tidied up" after the influx of sick students

The Sooke School District carried out a thorough cleaning of Sooke Elementary this weekend after several students fell ill last week.

Scott Stinson, director of SD62, said about 60 students were called ill last week and have similar symptoms to the flu, although nothing has been confirmed about the condition of their illness.

"What happens is that if we have a higher than normal absences rate, which is generally 10% higher, we will report to Island Health and work with them," Stinson said.

The district then did a "thorough cleaning" of the school, with supervisors working on weekends to thoroughly clean hard surfaces such as door handles and switches.

On Monday, the families also received a message reminding them of cleanliness and reminding students to wash their hands and instead of coughing or sneezing with their elbows. Stinson added that the booklet also advises families to leave immunocompromised students at home for a day or two.

This week, the absence rate has returned to normal, Stinson said.

According to Stinson, such events usually occur once a year, depending on the flu and the cold season.

"It's a normal school routine ... with so many kids together," Stinson said. "We try our best to make sure the schools are cleaned on a regular basis."
