On Monday afternoon, Carson Boyle-Love had to take out the trash for about an hour.

However, the Grade 4 student at Queen Mary Community School wasn't worried. In fact, he relished the opportunity to put down his books and pens for an afternoon and go out with his classmates for the first day of community cleanup.

"I hope my cousin took a few cans because we're going to take them to SARCAN and make some money," Boyle-Love said after Monday's cleanup.

"I like collecting trash because it contributes to making the earth more polluted. »

Boyle-Love is not alone in his efforts. Students from Westview Public High School, St. Michael's Community School and Wesmor Public High School went out with Queen Mary in the afternoon to pick up trash in their school's neighborhood.

Joel Hamilton, fourth grade teacher at Queen Mary, said it was a great way to make the children smile and laugh while helping them.

"We've talked a lot about keeping our environment clean and they really appreciate coming here and doing that (and) helping the community," said Hamilton, who took part in his first community cleanup Monday. "Seeing the smiles on their faces as they do it is huge."

District 1. Charlene Miller walked the students along East 15th Street Monday afternoon, helping them pick up trash before grabbing a snack at a neighborhood store.

Miller said it is always a joy to see student participation.

"It's really cool," he said. "There is nothing better than the help of the community and they are very good at helping." »

Monday's cleanup officially kicked off the City of Prince Albert's annual Community Cleanup Week. From May 6-11, residents can drop off their trash or other unwanted items at three neighborhood drop-off locations: St. Michael Parish at West 13th Street, the Kinsmen Water Park parking lot at West First Avenue and 28th Street, and . at the corner of East Sixth Avenue and East 10th Street, near Exhibition Drive.

Residents can bring trash, electronics, metals, grass and leaves, and recyclables from home. Tires and hazardous household waste are not accepted.

Starting this year, the Prince Albert Optimist Club is offering curbside pickup on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. The club will accept any device for a donation of $20 per device. Prices may increase if the device needs to be removed.

Anyone needing equipment pickup service can call or text 306-961-2946.
