Hurricane Boat Preparation: Tips You Need to Protect Your Boat

Review your hurricane plan: If necessary, move your boat to a safer location as described in your hurricane plan. This plan should be easily accessible for quick reference.

Deck Maintenance: Ensure scuppers and deck drains are clear of obstructions to allow water to drain efficiently from the deck and cabin. Proper placement of the boat can also help facilitate drainage.

Pay attention to leaks: Close all openings through which water could get into the interior or engine. These include hatches, port lights, fans and exhaust outlets. To prevent flood damage, it is important to keep your boat waterproof.

Battery Maintenance: Charge batteries and ensure electric bilge pumps are working. Clean debris from the bilge to prevent clogging of the pumps needed to remove water from the boat.

Reduce Wind: Minimize wind resistance by removing sails, tarps and bimini frames. This reduces the risk of damage from high winds during the storm.

Securing loose items: Remove any loose items that could become flying projectiles in high winds using a clear cover. These include sun loungers, cushions, fishing equipment, water sports equipment, etc.
