Tim Walz shares his best house cleaning advice |

It's not often that the political arena intersects with the world of interior design, but when it comes to the vice presidential candidate (aka "America's Dad"), cleanliness is a topic that comes to the forefront.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz recently participated in Subway Takes, a TikTok series in which guests share their thoughts and opinions on topics ranging from picnics to designer clothing. Walz's position? Home improvement starts with cleaning your gutters . "I've had problems with gutters before," he says in the clip . "When the basement gets wet, ice dams form and cause a lot of problems. »

Your solution to this serious household problem is simple: invest in helmets or gutter guards for optimal protection. "It covers it and lets the water through," he explains. "This will prevent water from entering your home."

Walz says he monitors his own gutters carefully and that it's one of the first things he notices in a home. However, he is convinced that gutter maintenance is a sign of responsible home management.

"I watch quite often; "I try not to judge," he says, pointing out that he believes gutter maintenance is more important than garden maintenance . "But when I see a gutter in good condition, it says a lot about a person. I think gutters are an important thing; They are really important. We can also take steps to improve our home with a gutter guard, available below on Amazon.

Experts agree that gutter maintenance is a crucial part of a happy and healthy home. We got a few more tips from the cleaning experts at Toolstation that reinforce Walz's point: Cleaning our gutters is one of the most important things we can do for our home.

"Gutters should be cleaned annually and checked for damage. It is best to carry out the work in late autumn when all the leaves have fallen. It is always best to wear sturdy work gloves to avoid scratching your hands on rough or rusty edges, tiles or slate," they explain.

Before we begin, they suggest we need a ladder, protective gloves, a small trowel [ like this one from Amazon ], a bucket, and a piece of hardboard or large cloth. A garden hose could also be helpful.

"To clear an overflowing gutter, you will need to attach a piece of hardboard to the bottom of the downspout to prevent debris from entering the gutter or drain, which could cause a blockage. Next, remove any debris with the trowel and make sure nothing falls into the downspout. Additionally, avoid getting residue on the walls as this can result in difficult-to-remove stains. We will begin this work in the fall.
