Even though it's one of the most unpleasant tasks in the house, Brits seem to be very diligent when it comes to keeping the bathroom clean.

In fact, a 2023 study by Plumbworld found that 79% of British homeowners would clean the room at least once a week and almost a quarter would spray it daily.

The bathroom accessories retailer also revealed that women wash more often than men: 84% say they clean the bathroom at least once a week.

With all the hours we spend bleaching and spraying on antibacterial products, it's no wonder many of us are looking for time-saving cleaning hacks .

Learn more about cleaning tips.

Luckily, one woman has revealed a clever trick that she says will keep your bathroom smelling divine for weeks.

Like many life hacks, this clever life hack was originally shared on Tiktok and was originally uploaded by Donna Mendoza, aka The Cleaning Lady .

Instead of buying expensive products, the savvy influencer uses a common household item already in her closet: a laundry detergent pod.

As shown in the short clip, take a pod and gently mix it with warm water to aid decomposition.

Then, further crush the capsule with a fork before pouring the mixture into the toilet brush holder (yes, it's that easy).

Best of all, excess water can be poured down the toilet to keep it clean and improve the scent of your bathroom.

In the caption, Donna claimed that she used this trick to: "...keep your bathroom smelling fresh for weeks."

This is not surprising since detergent pods break down dirt left in the bathroom just as they would on clothes.

You can even create an antibacterial version, as some cleaners contain ingredients that kill germs, saving you another cleaning task.

However, there's another reason we're obsessed with this trick: the cost.

Given that Tesco currently stocks a pack of 51 Fairy liquid capsules for £12, that means you'd only spend 2p on the trick (depending on the price per capsule).

That wasn't the only cleaning tip Donna shared for a fresh-smelling home, as the content creator also shared how she put together a "sink prep device" to freshen up her home.

By mixing a capful of all-round cleaner, scented dishwashing liquid and warm water, the influencer cleans her doors with it.

I'm a cleaning editor who runs marathons: Here's my laundry routine for smelly workout clothes

As a home editor , I've written a lot about laundry, and that's been a big advantage for me since I also run a lot, which means I always do original laundry. I have completed approximately 50 races, including five marathons and 15 half marathons. I often walk past hours all at once, and that usually results in some pretty smelly workout gear. (For example, the hairs on my nose were practically singed by my own putrid body odor... Turns out people can really smell bad!)

However, I managed to adapt and optimize my laundry routine to combat the dreaded permafunk and "reblooming." (Resurgence occurs when clothes smell good when washed, but the smell returns after wearing.) So if you feel like your clothes are going to stink in the long run, there is hope! Even if you're not a fitness fanatic (maybe you have an active job or are just a sweaty person), you'll probably find success with the method I've described. It may require an additional product or two and a few extra steps (easy!), but I promise you'll conquer BO and have the freshest-smelling clothes with these tips.

Dry sweaty clothes before putting them in the laundry basket.

This is perhaps the most important rule and, for me, the biggest change: I always dry my sweaty gym clothes before throwing them in the basket. If you throw them in the basket immediately, they will simply marinate. , soaking germs and bacteria until wash day. And in my experience it practically creates a bad smell that is more persistent and difficult to remove. You can hang them on a towel rack in your bathroom or purchase a clothesline , which is what I did.

Spray stain remover on the most original areas

Zachary Pozniak (the laundry genius behind @jeeves_ny ) once gave me this tip over the phone and I've found that it really works: If you want to make sure you focus on the scent, try applying stain remover to the pleasant spots (e.g. the areas to spray the armpits). ). ) as soon as you take off your clothes, i.e. while they are still wet, but before you hang them up to dry. I like Puracy stain remover.

Take advantage of this triumvirate of laundry products.

When laundry day comes, the type and quality of products you use are very important. I have defined three essential elements that I consider to be my "magic formula".

High-quality detergent with enzymes.

Of course, this is the product you absolutely need. A high-quality detergent that contains enzymes is ideal because these enzymes are great at interfering with body functions. (Enzymatic cleaners are generally great for targeting proteins found in organic matter like blood and sweat, which is why they are often recommended for cleaning pet urine!)

I use Tide Hygienic Clean Heavy Duty 10X Free liquid detergent and I prefer the liquid detergent because I can control the amount of detergent I add. You want to use just enough to get the job done, but not so much that it's difficult to rinse off. . Read the dosage instructions on the package, but for the size of my load I only had to fill the cap up to the first bar.

Oxygen based powder

Oxygen-based powders or oxygen bleach are ideal for eliminating bad odors. Actually! I use OxiClean's Free Multi-Purpose Stain Remover because I find it dissolves well and is odorless. For this product to be effective, like any other oxygen-based detergent, you will need to wash your clothes in warm or hot water, which is technically not ideal for the lifespan of your sports gear (excessive heat over time is not good). for stretchy materials), but I've found that washing clothes with hot water in my machine works without ripping the clothes to shreds.

Acid rinse

Downy Rinse and Refresh has become an integral part of my laundry routine. I like to think of it as an added thought – it actually eliminates any lingering odors. You may be thinking, "Fluff? Isn't that a fabric softener? Isn't that harmful to your sportswear? Rinse and Refresh is not a fabric softener. In fact, the opposite is true. It's a rinse aid and works in the same way as vinegar (so it's great for removing buildup), except it's more acidic and more effective than vinegar. You don't really need a ton either; I'm currently filling my little fabric softener slot with it. And it smells incredibly good . Sure it is strong in the bottle, but it evaporates and merges into the most enchanting and sophisticated perfume.

I've tried a few scents and my favorite is Cool Cotton and Fresh Lavender. (Now you know why my other products are fragrance-free - I don't want anything to compete with Rinse and Refresh!) And if you're not a fan of scents, there's a fragrance-free option.

Press for an additional rinse cycle

For safety reasons, I usually run an additional rinse (cold) to ensure any possible product residue is removed. Especially in sportswear, you should avoid product deposits , as they change the sweat absorption technology and promote rebirth.

Machine wash shoes

On hot days I sweat profusely in my running shoes... and it smells terrible. Here's how I unmold the shoes: After pouring in the detergent, I add some of my trusty OxiClean powder to the machine's drum, then load it with dirty towels and finally put my sneakers in . (Laces and inserts come in two separate shopping bags.) I wash with hot water and do an additional rinse with cold water. I then air dry the shoes, insoles and shoelaces.

Soak smelly hats

Yes, I machine wash my running caps, but I always air dry them to ensure they don't lose their shape. From time to time, usually in the summer, a pungent smell permeates the brim of my hat (and only my hat for some reason), and even my foolproof laundry routine can't eliminate the stench. To combat this, I will soak the hat in hot water and OxiClean for a few hours before washing the clothes . (Another tip: If you run with clean hair, your hat will smell less. Just saying!)

Get mesh bags

I'm a big fan of mesh laundry bags ! The S-hooks I purchased have a couple of them hanging on them to attach to the clothesline so they are always accessible. I get rid of my socks, hats when I'm worried about the Velcro sticking to my shirt, and even hair ties. Yes, they look great too and I wash them carefully! But putting socks in laundry bags also makes our lives a thousand times easier: it's much easier to find and combine them. Just try not to put too much in one bag, otherwise the laundry won't wash properly or dry completely. It will just be a dense, moist mass.

How to Make Healthy Foods Tastier – Consumer Reports

Additionally, "in some cases, spices can enhance a food's health benefits," she explains. For example, turmeric, commonly found in Indian and other cuisines, may have anti-inflammatory properties and some research suggests it may relieve joint pain and stiffness. And chili peppers contain capsaicin , which may also help control inflammation and promote blood flow, which could have positive effects on heart health.

Spices like turmeric, nutmeg, cumin, cinnamon and smoked paprika are some of John's favorite spices because of their spiciness. She suggests using mixtures of these spices to add more complexity to dishes than using just one. For example, try combining fenugreek, Kashmiri chili powder, pomegranate powder, and black cardamom to add smoky, spicy, sweet, and spicy flavors to proteins like chicken breast and tofu.

If making your own mixes seems intimidating, you can purchase ready-made mixes such as garam masala, kebab seasoning, and poultry mixes. "It makes a variety of healthy foods more interesting," says John.

Chef Devan Rajkumar, a Guyanese chef, also recommends spice blends. "I love chaat masala. Find it and use it! he says, especially about the chicken breast. This spice blend contains dried mango powder, cumin, coriander, black salt, chili powder and more. While some of these ingredients may not be familiar to you , you may be able to find them in the spice aisle or international section of a local grocery store, and you can certainly find them online as well.

How clean are your thermo mugs? - Interior edition

Insulated Stanley Cups are trending on social media and sales have skyrocketed. However, some people got sick after using them because they were not cleaned properly.

Stanley Cups have taken over social media, as have videos showing them covered in dirt after use.

Country singer Emily Zeck posted a video of her Stanley Cup on TikTok .

"I was too embarrassed to clean my Stanley more often," says Zeck. "To my dismay, there was quite a bit of mold in it," says Zeck.

Can bacteria in a cup make you sick ?

Travel blogger Alex Miller says she became sick after drinking from her water bottle.

"I felt really bad every day and thought, 'I don't think it's the food,'" Miller says. "There was like a small layer of mold around the ring and then on the mouthpiece."

To test the cleanliness of some glasses, Inside Edition took samples of several Stanley glasses, as well as other brands, from people who admitted to not cleaning them adequately. The tests were sent to Micrim laboratories for analysis.

In one of the jars, the results showed two types of bacteria, one of which could cause severe diffraction. In another case, three different types of bacteria were found, including E. coli.

An Inside Edition manufacturer's Simple Modern mug was the dirtiest of the mugs tested. His cup contained more than a quarter of a million bacteria. His cup contained six different types of bacteria, all of which could cause infection or disease.

Microbiologist Susan Whitter reviewed the lab results.

"Honestly, the toilet seats are cleaner than what we found in that trash can," Whitter said.

Manufacturers recommend completely disassembling your glasses and washing each part thoroughly with antibacterial soap and water after each use.

"The health and safety of Simple Modern customers is extremely important to us," Mike Beckham, founder and CEO of Simple Modern, told Inside Edition. "Simple Modern completely agrees that our products... should be cleaned regularly. Because a product is reusable, that also means it should be properly cleaned, even if it is only used for filtered water. In the product insert we ask customers to hand wash the containers and lids before first use. Simple Modern also offers complete cleaning and care instructions on their website: simplemodern.com/care.

Kyle Casteel, senior hydration product manager at Stanley, tells Inside Edition, "Ideally, your Stanley Quencher or other favorite Stanley should be washed after each use. Keep your Stanley clean inside and out for hygienic drinking. This is especially true if you drink a lot of beverage other than water.

If your mug has flexible rubber parts, it is important to clean them.

All beaker manufacturers include cleaning instructions.

Thursday Tips: Food Cleaning Tips – WFXB

From tea bags to grapefruit to white wine, they can help solve the cleaning problem.

Many household items can be used for cleaning and that's exactly what we're talking about in today's Thursday tips!

If your favorite pair of shoes starts to stink, you can use tea bags to eliminate the smell. You can use dried teas that you have not used or that you have actually used to make tea and are about to throw away. Place about 3 of these in each shoe to dry. Black tea works best, but any flavor can be used. Leave it on for 2 to 3 hours or overnight. For wet tea bags, place one in each shoe, leave for an hour, then remove. Wipe off the moisture and then dry it with a hair dryer.

If your children or grandchildren are so enthusiastic about painting that they draw crayons on the walls, all you need is mayonnaise. The spice is made up of oils that help break down the wax in the crayons. Apply a small amount of mayonnaise to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping with a damp microfiber cloth.

This only helps if you enjoy both red and white wine. If you spill some red wine, immediately use white wine to combat the stain. This is one of many tips for wine stains, but no matter which method you choose, be sure to always blot the stain. Rubbing causes everything to spread.

If you don't have your favorite bathroom cleaner, grab a grapefruit and some salt to remove soap residue. We take half a grapefruit and add a layer of salt. Then rub the grapefruit on the affected areas. Citric acid and coarse salt work together to remove stubborn foam.
