How clean are your thermo mugs? - Interior edition

Insulated Stanley Cups are trending on social media and sales have skyrocketed. However, some people got sick after using them because they were not cleaned properly.

Stanley Cups have taken over social media, as have videos showing them covered in dirt after use.

Country singer Emily Zeck posted a video of her Stanley Cup on TikTok .

"I was too embarrassed to clean my Stanley more often," says Zeck. "To my dismay, there was quite a bit of mold in it," says Zeck.

Can bacteria in a cup make you sick ?

Travel blogger Alex Miller says she became sick after drinking from her water bottle.

"I felt really bad every day and thought, 'I don't think it's the food,'" Miller says. "There was like a small layer of mold around the ring and then on the mouthpiece."

To test the cleanliness of some glasses, Inside Edition took samples of several Stanley glasses, as well as other brands, from people who admitted to not cleaning them adequately. The tests were sent to Micrim laboratories for analysis.

In one of the jars, the results showed two types of bacteria, one of which could cause severe diffraction. In another case, three different types of bacteria were found, including E. coli.

An Inside Edition manufacturer's Simple Modern mug was the dirtiest of the mugs tested. His cup contained more than a quarter of a million bacteria. His cup contained six different types of bacteria, all of which could cause infection or disease.

Microbiologist Susan Whitter reviewed the lab results.

"Honestly, the toilet seats are cleaner than what we found in that trash can," Whitter said.

Manufacturers recommend completely disassembling your glasses and washing each part thoroughly with antibacterial soap and water after each use.

"The health and safety of Simple Modern customers is extremely important to us," Mike Beckham, founder and CEO of Simple Modern, told Inside Edition. "Simple Modern completely agrees that our products... should be cleaned regularly. Because a product is reusable, that also means it should be properly cleaned, even if it is only used for filtered water. In the product insert we ask customers to hand wash the containers and lids before first use. Simple Modern also offers complete cleaning and care instructions on their website: simplemodern.com/care.

Kyle Casteel, senior hydration product manager at Stanley, tells Inside Edition, "Ideally, your Stanley Quencher or other favorite Stanley should be washed after each use. Keep your Stanley clean inside and out for hygienic drinking. This is especially true if you drink a lot of beverage other than water.

If your mug has flexible rubber parts, it is important to clean them.

All beaker manufacturers include cleaning instructions.
