Clean, separate, cook, chill: 4 rules for the safe preparation of Thanksgiving meals

Thanksgiving may look a little different for families this year as gatherings are getting smaller and less prepared for food due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, there are still a few tips you can follow to ensure your Thanksgiving cooking is safe and healthy.

"COVID is not transmitted through food. We know it's a respiratory disease, but that doesn't mean food is neglected. This means that you always have to take care of your food and focus on food safety, "says Dr. Mindy Brashears, USDA Under-Secretary of State for Food Safety.

Clean, separate, cook, cool:

Dr. Brashears says there are four simple areas to remember when preparing your meals.

"Clean, separate, boil, let cool down. And these guidelines will really help you along the way, "said Dr. Brashears.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention split these four areas on their website . Cleaning - Wash your hands and the cooking area regularly. The USDA says to lather your hands for 20 seconds to prevent cross-contamination as well. Separately - Be careful not to cause any contamination when handling ingredients. Koch: Dr. Brashears says you should make sure to check your turkey's temperature in thicker areas and set the oven temperature to no less than 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Refrigeration - Make sure your food is properly refrigerated.

Defrost the turkey:

Dr. Brashears also shared tips on how to safely thaw your turkey. She says the first step in preparation is to thaw the turkey in the refrigerator in cold water. You will need to thaw the turkey for one to three days if your turkey weighs 4 to 12 pounds, and three to four days if it weighs 12 to 16 pounds.

"If you forget, you can put it in the sink with cold water, but you have to change that cold water every 30 minutes because when the water gets hot, bacteria or germs start to grow in it. Turkey," says Dr. Brashears.
