LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) - With many of you planning on visiting family members this Christmas season, health officials and a teacher at UNL want you to do it safely.
The UNL professor says having Thanksgiving outside is a good idea to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
"After all the research I've done, we often find that indoor pollutants are typically two to five times higher than outdoor pollutants," said Jennifer Lau, professor of architectural engineering at UNL.
It also encourages families to focus on the air in their home when they choose to dine indoors.
"The extra protection you can add to minimize air transfer is to improve ventilation and add extra air purification if necessary," Lau said.
So how can you improve the ventilation in your home to keep loved ones safe? Lau said another step could be to buy air purifiers that use UVC light, as she has researched classrooms to kill airborne viruses indoors. As for food, he recommends skipping the plate this year.
"You deliver the item to each person, or if that is not possible, you may have a specific person wearing a mask while you hand out the item to the people at the table," Lau said.
The Lincoln Lancaster Health Department also posted tips recommending taking into account the number of people present at each meeting.
Prioritize safety for the special needs of children and those at high risk. They are added to try and share a meal via video chat or videoconference to create social distance. Lau also advises you to wear a three-layer mask.
"So you can take this extra precaution because it is really a very effective source control," said Lau. "They primarily block all of your drops so they are out of the air. You don't come out. We have a saying: I wear my mask for you and you wear a mask for me.
According to Lau, all of these tips can be used in hand washing and surface cleaning.
