How to clean leather: car seats, sofas, pants, boots, and more

Leather is one of the most durable natural materials on the market, which is why it is often chosen for jackets, shoes, furniture, and more. Leather products are easy on the eye and very durable, but require special treatment to keep them clean. A regular cleaning program will ensure that your leather will be in its best shape over time.

How to clean leather

The type of leather you are cleaning indicates which cleaning method to use.

You need to make sure that you check the leather type as the wrong products can damage the leather if you use it incorrectly.

If you are unsure how your chosen detergent will interact with your leather product, you should test the cleaning material on an inconspicuous spot.

leather sofa

First, clean the surface of your leather sofa from dirt with the brush of your vacuum cleaner to avoid scratches.

Check the label on your sofa to make sure certain cleaning products are not recommended or avoided.

The best way to clean a leather sofa is to use saddle soap or leather spray, a combination of soap and oil, with a soft cloth once a week.

Most sofas are made of leather and it is good to use a slightly damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap for quick cleaning.

leather bag

Start by emptying the bag inside and out, lathering the cleaning solution, and massaging it into the bag.

Let the frothy solution dry for a few minutes before applying a protective cream. Pay special attention to the handles and frequently used areas.

Then you need to let this barrier cream dry for 10 minutes before polishing off any excess material.

If you have a light-colored bag or a very absorbent leather bag, you can repeat the protection process several times to really take care of the slightly stained leather.

For those pressed for time, you need to focus on the main areas, including the handles. If you clean and protect them quickly, they will stay fresh longer.

Leather car seats

For leather car seats, the first thing you need to do is vacuum the seats of any debris.

Remove surface grime by spraying the chairs with cleaner and wiping the seats with a microfiber cloth.

Then use a soft bristle brush to thoroughly clean the leather by gently rubbing it to shake up the dirt and bring it to the surface.

Wipe the seats with a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove any remaining detergent.

Perform this process three to four times a year to avoid dirt build-up.

Leather clothing

Before you start cleaning leather clothing, be sure to check the label and avoid washing if it says "not washable".

In the case of patent leather parts, you should clean them with a glass or mirror cleaner and then wipe them with a lint-free cleaning cloth.

Leather that does not say "not washable" can be washed free on a gentle cycle in cold water.

You can also use a dedicated leather cleaner by following the cleaner's instructions.

Always avoid putting leather clothing in a dryer as this can permanently damage the item.
