Delmarva Power is ready for the summer storm season

Throughout the year, as many families were working and learning virtually from home, Delmarva Power continued to do important work to prepare the local power grid to meet the increased demand in the warmer months and to keep homes and businesses using throughout the summer To supply electricity.

Delmarva Power's staff regularly perform maintenance and inspections, as well as critical updates and repairs, to prepare for extreme weather conditions, including an active hurricane season. This work is essential to providing safe and reliable service to the company's nearly 670,000 customers in Delaware and Maryland.

"Our dedicated people have done a significant amount of work during this pandemic to provide safe, reliable, affordable and sustainable energy services to our valued customers," said Gary Stockbridge, Regional President of Delmarva Power. "As the communities in our Delaware and Maryland service areas begin lifting their COVID-19 restrictions, we remain committed to providing reliable service throughout the summer and beyond. We encourage our customers to use the many tools and resources we offer to prepare for summer storms and hurricanes, as well as tips and information to save money and energy during the warmer months.

Delmarva Power's work to prepare for the summer storm season is part of the company's ongoing efforts to modernize the local power grid and improve reliability for customers in Delaware and Maryland. Last year, Delmarva Power hit the company's record performance in 2019, a 9% decrease in outages from the previous low in 2018. Customers experienced fewer than one outage on average over the year, and when service was interrupted, crews were able to safely restore service on average in just 93 minutes.

The work that Delmarva Power continues to do is crucial to strengthen the local power grid against bad weather and prevent avoidable failures. In addition to these efforts, Delmarva Power performs hundreds of tasks to prepare for the summer season, including system work, tests, and exercises.

The company also encourages customers to be prepared and gives these tips:

Put together an emergency storm kit. Add a battery-powered radio, flashlight, first aid kit, battery-powered or wind-powered watch, extra batteries, medication, multiple tools, cell phones with chargers, and a list of important phone / emergency numbers.

Have bottled water and easy-to-prepare long-life foods ready. Have a flashlight with fresh batteries ready on every floor of the house. Identify an alternative place where you and / or your family can meet in the event of an extended breakdown.

Read the manufacturer's information for the safe operation of your generator. Do not connect a generator directly to your home wiring. Never use a generator in a confined space.

Preparation is a responsibility that everyone should take seriously. If a severe storm occurs, check the local weather reports regularly and follow the advice of local emergency management officers. Immediately report a broken wire or service issue by calling 800-898-8042 or using the company's advanced mobile app.

As the temperature rises, so does the energy consumption. Delmarva Power provides helpful information and tips to help customers save money and energy all summer:

  • Manage your invoice in My Account. Online power management tools show you how much electricity you are using. The updated billing function informs you about your billing costs at any time. You can also get advice on your energy saving goals.
  • Install energy efficient light bulbs that use up to 75% less energy than traditional light bulbs.
  • When leaving a room, unplug unused electrical devices from the socket. Chargers consume power if left plugged in after the device is fully charged.
  • Set your thermostat a few degrees higher in summer and lower in winter if your health allows.
  • In the summer, pull the curtains down to keep the heat of the sun from entering your home.
