The Department of Insurance and Financial Services has given residents these tips after bad weather:

Michigan residents who have been affected by flooding or other storm damage should:
  • Contact your insurance company's hotline and / or claims agent to report the claim. Have your insurance number and other relevant information ready. The DIFS has created a form for tracking insurance claims [lnks.gd] to support this process.
  • In the event of water damage to a home or other structure, consumers should inform their insurance company of the water damage and check what coverage is available. Consumers shouldn't simply claim the damage was due to flooding as there may be other causes of water damage, such as a defective backwater or defective sump pump that can be covered by the police.
  • Review insurance policies to understand your insurance coverage. Flood damage is not covered by the usual household and tenant insurance. There are certain insurance policies, including Federal Flood Insurance [lnks.gd] , that homeowners must purchase for coverage in the event of floods or water and sewer protection from storms. Or other natural disasters. It is important to discuss these options with your insurance agent or insurance company well before flooding or damage occurs. Note that federal flood insurance coverage typically takes 30 days to take effect.
  • Take steps to protect property and prevent further loss. Retain receipts for purchases of supplies that are needed to protect property.
  • Document the loss. Take photos or videos of damaged items and do not dispose of them unless instructed to do so by the insurance company.
  • If a vehicle is damaged by water, consumers should contact their auto insurance company. You can be insured for damage if they are fully covered in your auto insurance.
