Cleaning expert Fiona Mills, who is no stranger to big messes, has shared some helpful floor cleaning tips to help readers get the job done.

Speaking to Insider , the former picket fence technician shared step-by-step instructions on how to remove common stains from carpets and hardwood floors in your home.

FRONTAL ALCOHOL AND WHITE WINE FOR CARPET STAINS

Mills recommended Shout Stain Remover for carpet stains such as marks or paint. Having said that, a cheaper solution is rubbing alcohol.

And when that dreaded moment comes and you spill red wine on your light-colored carpet, don't worry. According to Mills, you can use white wine to get rid of stubborn red wine stains.

According to Bobvila.com , white wine acts like cold water to dilute the concentration of red wine.

MINERAL OIL FOR WATER STAINS ON SIDEWALK

Lemon or mineral oil works well for light water stains.

Light water stains are water damage that only affects the surface or surface layer of the wood.

On the other hand, dark water stains develop when light water stains are neglected and eventually penetrate deeper into the wood, which can lead to mold growth.

For light water stains, Mills suggested rubbing them with mineral oil or lemon oil.

"If the wood has become discolored over time and from heavy traffic, it's better to sand, polish and restore it," he said.

SALT FOR FLOOR STAINS

To remove troublesome stains from hardwood floors, you should make a paste of baking soda and table salt.

"Pour a generous amount of salt onto the stain and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. The salt absorbs most of the stain," Mills said.

"Remove the salt and use baking soda mixed with lemon oil as a paste, then rub the stain until it's gone."

BAKING SODIUM AND OLIVE OIL FOR SCRATCHES ON WOOD FLOORS

"Deep scratches on hardwood floors are an issue I personally deal with due to my runaway giant pup," Mills said.

She suggested applying baking soda and a small amount of olive oil to the affected area to remove the scratch.

Mills asked, "Wait about 5 minutes and gently buff with a sponge, then wipe with a damp cloth."

He added that Bona Floor Cleaner can also work.
