Tidying up and basic cleaning for spring - WSAZ

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ/IVANHOE NEWS) -

The snow begins to melt. The air warms up. That's right, spring is here! But what is the most dreaded part of spring? Cleaning! Find out why you should take the time to declutter and deep clean.

While you might think that an extra box in a basement or bedroom isn't a big deal, clutter can be a hazard. A study from St. Lawrence University found that a messy bedroom and a bad night's sleep go hand in hand.

A dirty house will kill your energy and productivity. Researchers have found that being clean helps you feel in control of your surroundings and can improve your mood. Want tips to help you clear the clutter? Take it piece by piece and focus on one category. Set sensible goals so you don't give up halfway. Create a keep, donate, and throw away pile, and if you find yourself saving something for someone else, give them a deadline to get it back. And what about those hard-to-clean items you avoid? Your pillow can contain oil, dirt, sweat, bacteria, saliva and even mold. Wash them in the washing machine on the gentle cycle with very little detergent. Put tennis balls in the dryer to keep the filling from clumping.

Coffee makers are another item that gets overlooked. An international NSF study of kitchen products found that 50% of the deposits examined in coffee machines contained mold or yeast.

Spring is also a good time to replace sponges. More than 75% of sponges and tea towels contained salmonella, E. coli and faeces. And don't forget your study and living room. In 22 homes, the NSF found yeast and mold and even staph on the computer keyboard, remote control and video game controller.

Ice makers are also often overlooked. First, unplug the refrigerator and empty the ice, clean with warm soapy water, replace the filter and run a few ice cycles before use.
