Newswise -- Washington, DC -- May 26, 2022 -- More than a third of Americans (36%) are unaware of manufacturers' recommendations for cleaning and caring for their appliances, such as refrigerators, HVAC systems, or washers and dryers, according to the results, published by the American Cleaning Institute (ACI).

This suggests that millions of Americans could be missing out on significant costs and sustainability benefits. Regular cleaning and maintenance keeps the home running smoothly, which can save homeowners money on their monthly utility bills and avoid costly repairs ( realtors ).

Proper maintenance of common appliances like refrigerators can also often be overlooked when it comes to durability. For example, refrigerator condenser coils should be cleaned twice a year. Otherwise, dust can make it less energy efficient and shorten its lifespan.

"Knowing, understanding and implementing best cleaning practices will not only save families money, but will also have a positive impact on the environment," said Brian Sansoni, ACI senior vice president of communications, outreach and membership. "Especially today, ACI wants Americans to educate themselves and learn about device care recommendations to ensure longer lifespans for the devices they depend on in the home."

These results come from an Ipsos survey conducted on February 16-17, 2022 on behalf of the American Institute of Cleaning. For the survey, a sample of 1,005 adults ages 18 and older from the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The accuracy of Ipsos online surveys is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the survey has a confidence interval of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points for all respondents.
