Safety tips for grilling in early summer - Fire Line

May is one of the best months for barbecuing.

Prevent grill fires by following a few safety tips

Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer. This is the time of year when most outdoor grills get dusted off and fired up. Whether you're grilling on the roof of an apartment or in your backyard, consider these safety and fire safety tips before lighting your grill. Most barbecue fires can be prevented.

Furnishings :

  • Grills are for outdoor use only. Never grill indoors - dangerous carbon monoxide (CO) can build up and kill you. If you suspect CO poisoning, call 9-1-1.
  • Locate your grill on a level surface in an open area at least three feet away from buildings, combustible surfaces, dry leaves and brush.
  • Make sure the drip tray is empty and clean and the grill parts are in place.
  • With propane gas grills, make sure the hose connection is tight and check the hoses for leaks. This is especially important if you are using the grill for the first time in a long time.

During use:

  • Never leave grills unattended while grilling.
  • Maintain a three foot area around the grill where children and pets are not allowed.
  • Keep starting fluid, lighters or matches out of the reach of children.
  • Use the right tools. Long-handled grilling tools and flame-retardant gloves prevent burns from heat and flames.
  • For charcoal grills, avoid adding lighter fluid once the coals are lit.

Clean up:

  • For propane grills, turn off the grill and fuel bottle immediately after cooking.
  • For charcoal grills , allow the embers to cool for 48 hours before discarding . If you can't wait, pour plenty of water over the coals and stir to ensure the fire goes out. Never place coals in plastic, paper, or wooden containers; place in a metal container with a tight lid.
