Consumer Reports: Tips for cleaning up your digital clutter - The Arizona Family

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Be honest: Is your inbox out of control? Are you embarrassed to show your phone to others for fear they will see the hundreds or thousands of messages? Dont be afraid. Consumer Reports has some simple tips on how to take control of your inbox while eliminating other digital clutter.

Google makes digital cleanup a little easier with their storage manager. It highlights photos, videos, huge PDFs and other large files and asks if you want to delete them. Also, you can use the search tool to find emails with attachments or messages of specific dates. Then you can even create a filter to remove the emails you have captured.

When deleting email, remember old digital accounts that you no longer use. Keeping them open can pose a security risk. Businesses could be hacked, putting their information in the wrong hands.

You can find forgotten accounts using the welcome email you received when you signed up. You can also look up your shared usernames online and look up your saved passwords in your browser or personal password manager. And if you've signed up for accounts through social media like Facebook, you'll find them there.

Another tip: Use good judgment when signing up for recurring emails and newsletters. And if you find yourself not reading the ones you receive, open them one last time to log out.
