Keeping white socks fresh and clean can be a challenge as it often seems like nothing can remove stubborn brown stains.
Although a bottle of bleach may seem tempting, it can actually yellow and discolor white cotton socks. In order to get the radiant white look, CleanFreaks have developed a natural product that can be used to easily remove dirty stains.
A woman posted a photo of dirt-stained white socks to Mrs. Hinch's Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page, asking for help removing the stains after other methods failed, the Express reports.
She wrote: "These socks just came out of the washing machine. They were washed in warm water and soaked in OxiClean."
"Please give me some recommendations to remove these dark spots and make them whiter."
The post received more than 160 comments, including many details on using soda to whiten and remove stains from socks. One person said, "The soda crystals are really good and you can get them at most supermarkets and on Amazon."
"Depending on how dirty they are, add 1/2 cup to 1 cup of laundry soda in the washing machine and set it to 60 degrees."
Another cleaning enthusiast commented, "I'm a mom of five boys and one girl and I always use soda in her white socks. That changes things."
"Soda crystals. That is amazing. My socks look like new. I just put the soda crystals right in the washer drum," replied another.
One person said, "Get some soda crystals. This is the best I've ever used to lift my son's dirty white socks.
While another recommended, "Soak in washing soda and then wash as usual." The dark spots will disappear and the socks will be like new.
One cleanliness freak wrote: "I have two kids and had the same problem. Now I just add a tablespoon of soda to each white wash and now they are nice and white.
Sodium carbonate has a variety of uses, from cleaning drains and cleaning washing machines to enhancing clothes and removing stains.
When using soda as a laundry booster to remove organic stains, households simply need to add a tablespoon of this natural detergent to their regular laundry detergent.
For very stubborn stains, we recommend using baking soda crystals as a pre-soak. Prepare a strong solution of soda and warm water and soak the socks for an hour before washing normally.
Soda crystals can be used with any wash. Simply put the required amount in the detergent drawer or directly in the drum together with the usual powder detergent.
If you use liquid detergent in the drum, put the baking soda crystals in the drawer and vice versa so that the liquid does not cause the crystals to clump together.
