The Red Cross has responded to home fires in Aiken County three times in the past month.

Although the cause of each fire was not disclosed, one of the fires is believed to have started from an air conditioning unit.

The Augusta Fire Department has provided a number of tips to help prevent air conditioning fires:

  • Regular Maintenance – Schedule routine air conditioning maintenance including filter cleaning and wear checks.
  • Professional Inspection: Have your air conditioner inspected by a professional to ensure it is working properly and is not a fire hazard.
  • Proper Installation - Ensure air conditioners are installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and local codes.
  • Clearance: Keep the area around air conditioners clear of debris, vegetation, and other combustible materials.
  • Electrical Checks: Periodically inspect the air conditioner electrical connections and wiring for signs of damage or overheating.
  • Smoke Alarms: Install smoke alarms near air conditioners and throughout the home for early warning of a fire.
