What does it take to become a professional car detailer? - Engine cracker

A few years ago, with Corona looming and working from home becoming the norm, I needed a way to get out of the house. It turned out that cleaning my own cars was the catalyst for starting a car detailing company . But as I quickly learned, it takes more than a vacuum and a positive attitude to become a professional detailer .

You will need more patience than you think

If you're considering becoming a professional auto detailer, you probably enjoy keeping your cars nice and clean. If I can't grant you any other wisdom , at least remember this: we are the strangest.

Most people simply lack the time or motivation to keep their car clean. For many, this goes beyond crumbs, dust, and a few stray hairs and becomes really difficult territory. Removing coffee stains from carpets is easy with the right chemical, but next to impossible without it.

And when you're dealing with grease stains, or worse, bodily fluids , a whole different process is required.

Then there is animal hair. Everyone loves to take their dog on a trip. Nobody likes to clean the skin of these carpets afterwards. So they will call you, the reputable local retailer, to help them out. If you've never done this before, you'll lose your mind trying to figure it out. Luckily, there are some simple tricks that make the process easier and I've discussed them here .

The details don't end with cleaning the car

If nobody knows who you are or what you do, it doesn't matter if you can transform a disposable interior into a new showroom. Social media makes it a little easier, but with great service, customers expect a great experience .

A name, logo, website and online booking form will set you apart from other startup competitors. These services alone were worth at least one or two appointments a week during my first year on the job. And all without paid advertising. If you invest some money in increasing visibility on Facebook or Google, your results could be even better.

Practice, practice, practice!

The key to a successful auto detailing business is delivering a quality result . Also, it is NOT intended to provide a low quality result. If you've never bought a polisher before, don't sit in a customer's car the first time.

Of course , it's not as complex as some think. But it's also not the kind of thing you can rush into and expect great results. Find a junkyard, grab a spare body part or two, and bring them back to life. Stock up on some quality stuff, queue up for a tutorial like this series from Rupes , and join in without the risk of wrecking someone's real car.

Before you become a professional caricaturist, you should draw yourself working on your own car

It may seem like a waste of time, but filming yourself detailing your own car is a great way to hone your craft as a professional detailer. Not only will you spot inefficiencies in your process, you'll also learn how to set up your equipment to make your life easier. Once you're in business, every second counts. When you understand how to work effectively and efficiently, all aspects of running your cosmetics business become easier.
