Bike Maintenance Tips: How to Clean and Lubricate Chain at Home, Read - DNP INDIA

Bike Maintenance Tips : Motorcycle chains get dirty. Whether you're running through the forest or a pristine trail, they pick up dirt and debris. Before applying fresh lube to your chain, it is sometimes effective to brush it with a cloth soaked in cleaner to remove surface dirt. However, you should clean the drive chain thoroughly after every oil change. In this article we will explain how to properly clean and lubricate your bicycle chain.

Bike Maintenance Tips: How to Clean and Lubricate Your Chain at Home

1. Place it on a stand

To place your motorcycle on the main stand or even on the workshop stand, choose a flat and flawless surface. To avoid dirtying your motorcycle and yourself, it's usually a good idea to start in a clean area. It gets dirty, so remember to clean it yourself. Make sure drainage is adequate as we are using water.

2. Wash the chain

In countries like ours, where roads are not regularly cleaned, motorcycle chains are particularly dirty. The greasy surface and open position of motorcycle chains make them magnets for dust and dirt. This is a major cause of closed chain guards found on most commuter motorcycles in India. Because these chains are exposed to the elements, they need to be cleaned as soon as possible. The water will loosen any remaining mud from the chain and help remove as much dirt from the surface as possible.

3. Clean the chain

Start by spraying general-purpose WD-40, available at most hardware stores, or chain cleaner for a thorough clean. To spray each link in the chain, make sure the wheel is rotating as you spray. After letting it sit for a few minutes, clean the teeth with your toothbrush or chain cleaning brush. Scrub the brush well and clean it from time to time. Finally, gently clean the chain with a cloth to ensure it returns to its original beautiful metal tone.

4. Lubricate chain

Applying motorcycle chain lubricant to the chain is the final and most satisfying process. Be sure to grease each link of the chain using the nozzle that comes with the spray. Spray in small jets to prevent it from spreading everywhere else that would be difficult to clean later. Be particularly careful not to over-lubricate or contaminate the rear tire. To control overspray, it is recommended to place a piece of cardboard behind the chain.
