Five Tips to Clean Up iCloud and Save Space in Your Backup – Gearrice

I completely understand that Apple needs to make money somehow, but the question of whether iCloud accounts continue to offer a measly 5GB for free is not important and is much debated. At least on my part. As we approach 2024, the amount of storage is too low, although we want to encourage users to pay for more storage.

The feature most affected by this storage limit on free accounts is iPhone backup, which, when stored in iCloud, can quickly fill up that space. So let's look at some tips to make this backup "easier" in case you don't have much storage space.

WhatsApp is the main culprit

It is logical that the applications we use intensively take up the most space, butWhatsApp is criminal . The app and all of our chats take up space both locally on the device and in the backup created byiOS 17, but WhatsApp also independently creates its own copy in the cloud.

It consumes a lot of space and that is why cleaning WhatsApp is one of the best tasks you can do on your iPhone. You can do this in your Settings, Storage and Data section, Storage Management section:

From here you have the option to delete larger videos or videos that have been transferred multiple times. A good tip is to enable temporary messages so that they are automatically deleted after the desired time and the memory is never full.

Be careful with photos if you don't store them in the cloud

Forgoing iCloud to store all your photos locally on iPhone isn't a bad idea or old fashioned, it all depends on the use and organization you want to give your photo library. However, keep in mind that all these photos will be added to the phone backup and will take up a lot of space if you save them to the cloud.

The solution if you don't want to subscribe to one of the iCloud+ packages is to move the photos to a computer and there manage much of the collection in your local directories and ideally store this "storage" on an external drive. Drive to protect yourself from fears.

Apps and games can also cause problems

Anything you download using these apps will also add weight to your iPhone backup.

The backup that iOS creates is intelligent and saves the storage space occupied by applications that can be downloaded from the App Store as often as you want. But be careful: some applications download their own data before they work. And for games like Resident Evil: Village, this data can take up several GB, to which we also have to add the series andmovies that you have downloaded in applications like Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video or Apple TV+ .

And guess what: all of this data is also added to the backup . Therefore, you can also reduce the size by deleting downloaded series and movies. And delete any games that may be taking up a lot of space on your iPhone.

Update iOS to prevent new versions from taking up storage space

You probably have automatic iOS updates, which we always recommend to keep your iPhone up to date. However, if you do not apply these updates, it is possible that the download of the new version has been saved on the system and is taking up disk space .

The good news is that there is a very simple solution: update the system and you're done. The new version is installed and then removed. And sometimes that means freeing up several GB of local storage space on the iPhone and creating a backup.

I've been using different iPhones for 15 years and have always set them up right out of the box.

Check old backups or backups from your other devices

If you've never checked, you may have backups of old iPhones that you've used in the past. You can check this by doing the following:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Click on your name.
  • Click on "iCloud."
  • Click "Manage Account Area".
  • Click on "Copies":
Icloud backup iPhone Apple
Icloud backup iPhone Apple

There you can see if you have old copies that you no longer use and delete them . Don't be afraid of it, all you need is the backup of the iPhone you are currently using.
