Cleaning the oven is one of the messiest, most time-consuming, and most dreaded household chores out there, but it's a job that needs to be done. A stained and greasy oven not only looks unpleasant, there are also practical reasons to clean it. Dirty ovens can affect the taste of cooked food. Burnt food residues and layers of fat can pose a fire hazard. In addition, dirt hinders the circulation of hot air, making the oven inefficient and food poorly cooked. Depending on the dish, undercooked foods can cause food poisoning. All in all, the scrubbing is worth it.
"But my oven cleans itself."
According to experts, your oven's self-cleaning mechanism works well. First introduced in 1963, the self-cleaning oven is practical and energy efficient. The downside, however, is that it will heat up your home unnecessarily, create smoke and odors, and potentially damage some furnace components. Plus it takes a long time. Therefore, some prefer to replace mechanization with effort.
How to clean the oven properly
- Remove the racks and place them in the sink or tub so you can clean them later with soap and water.
- Mix baking soda and water to form a paste.
- Using a cloth or sponge, cover the inside of your oven, including the door, with a thick layer of paste. Do not cover the coils.
- Let the dough rest for a few hours or even overnight.
- Wipe away the paste with a damp cloth and use a spatula to loosen stubborn pieces of paste or dirt.
- Mix white vinegar with water and spray the inside of your oven.
- Wipe off any residue with a damp cloth.
- Wipe the oven with a dry cloth, replace the racks, and allow the oven to air dry.
How often should you clean your oven?
Ideally, you should clean your oven every three months, depending on how often you use it. However, if you're roasting or baking something particularly fatty and fragrant, you may want to do it more often. Let your eyes, your nose and your taste buds judge.
