Buyers of Jurong East get hands-on cleaning tips

How much do you think your hands are clean after washing?

The godparents of Yuhua Village Market in Jurong East were spotted yesterday as part of the Community Outreach Initiative at Ng Teng Fong Hospital.

The program, which ran from 8:30 to 11:30, was aimed at both buyers and street vendors to highlight the importance of hand hygiene. The event was organized in the context of World Hand Hygiene Day, which was celebrated worldwide last Saturday.

Studies show that washing hands can reduce the likelihood of gastrointestinal and respiratory infections.

It is a fundamental health practice that people need to consciously adopt in their daily lives, Dr. Surinder Pada, director of infectious diseases and president of the hospital's infection control team.

Dr. Pada said, "From dirty tissue paper to dirty utensils, hand hygiene should be practiced as long as you have touched something that may contain viruses.

"The most important thing that affected medicine was not the arrival of antibiotics, but things like drinking water and child vaccination, and hand hygiene is one of the health measures that can have a significant impact." ,

Members of the hospital's infection control team showed clients and providers the right way to wash their hands.

Then they had the opportunity to test their knowledge. Before washing, they had to apply a spray with a special fluorescent dye. If his clothes were washed, the surface of his hands would glow under ultraviolet light. Areas that have not been cleaned properly remain as dark spots.

Ms. Guo Kok, 69, worked in a café before retiring and already knew how to wash her hands. But she said the session was a good refresher course.

"Sometimes people, especially older people, walk in their streets, so that public events like these remind people that hand washing should be taken seriously."

Another customer, Saw Ngek Geok, 63, said, "There is a lot of construction and dust here, so I have to be careful about hygiene.

The hospital hopes to launch more public health awareness initiatives in other parts of the West.
