It is heartbreaking to see children with health problems, and hospitals across the country are realizing that these children are often scared in difficult situations. Several hospitals try to alleviate this stress in children by allowing them to go to the operating theater in their own remote-controlled car .

Hospitals can be daunting for anyone, let alone a small child. Sitting in a remote-controlled car gives children the opportunity to have fun in a difficult and frightening situation. This distracts them from the stress they experienced during their stay in the hospital and from the anxiety associated with the operation.

"Cars give children a sense of control and independence," said Caitlin French, a child life specialist. "Recent studies support the use of driver-driven vehicles to reduce patient anxiety during the transition to the operating room."

The Shriners Children's Hospital in Northern California is one of the hospitals that implements this practice. All of her cars are electric , which makes them safe for indoor use and remotely controlled by a nearby nurse. The small cars are designed for patients from 2 to 7 years, but all patients have another option when they can use the car.

"We found out that cars are beneficial to patients and parents " , said Dr. Sundeep Tumber, Head of Anesthesia Shriners Hospital. "Children who undergo surgery can be separated from their parents in an entertaining way, and parents can say goodbye to a smiling child instead of brushing their tears."

Occasionally, surgery and hospitalization are inevitable for children with serious health problems. However, using remote-controlled cars in the mix seems like an excellent way to add some fun to the mix.
