7 TikTok cleaning and DIY tips that you shouldn't try at home

TikTok has grown steadily over the past few years, and the British are scrolling through tons of videos of cooking recipes, comedies, and dance routines.

Thousands of Brits even turn to social media for tips and advice on life, including home decor.

Many turn to TikTok for "tricks" to help us save time on our household chores and home improvement projects.

However, many of these videos can be misleading and it is important to remember that some suggestions can also be dangerous.

To help distinguish between useful and harmful, MattressNextDay analyzed the credibility of seven popular TikTok tips for DIY and housework.

Painted tiles are uneven and can be harmful to your health

While painted tiles can look pretty, the paint often doesn't last enough to withstand the natural wear and tear of walking. This will make it uneven and potentially create chips that people could trip over. The entire flooring will likely need to be replaced.

Mixing detergents can cause burns. On TikTok, many cleaning influencers suggest mixing certain cleaning products to increase cleaning power, but it's dangerous:

  • Bleach + vinegar = chlorine gas (causes coughing, breathing difficulties and burning watery eyes)
  • Bleach + ammonia = chloramine (causes coughing, breathing difficulties and burning watery eyes)
  • Bleach + rubbing alcohol = chloroform (difficulty breathing, irritation of the nose and throat. Acute inhalation may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness and drowsiness)

Taking off clothes can lead to permanent loss of color from sheets

Bedding stripping is the method of soaking bedding in baking soda, arm and hammer baking soda, and washing powder to remove stubborn dirt.

However, these harsh chemicals can cause permanent color loss in your sheets and make them tougher.

Painting your kitchen countertops can harbor germs that can contaminate your food.

Many countertops are made of laminate, which means the paint won't stick to the surface as it is waterproof. Slight bumps create splinters that bacteria can enter when you are preparing food.

Using an air freshener to clean your radiator could cause a fire

Another TikTok hack shows someone spraying a Fabulousa air freshener into their radiators and pushing back the dust to clean it while the fresh, clean smell lingers. However, the label on the bottle indicates that radiators should "be kept away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames" and, in the worst case scenario, could cause a fire.

Using a drill to clean your bathtub could damage it

A big trend on TikTok is to stick a sponge or cleaning utensil in the drill bit, lather it up with a detergent, and turn it on to dig deep into crevices in joints, bathtubs, and more.

However, the strong force could damage or damage your tub or grout, or if you don't hold it properly it could result in injury.

Ironing sheets in bed can burn you or your mattress.

Ms. Hinch's fans have made this a popular trick; However, you should never iron your sheets in bed as the heat can permanently damage memory foam and latex mattresses, or you as it is not a perfectly flat surface to fall on. Instead, use an anti-wrinkle spray or diluted fabric softener while the sheets are on the bed.
