Sealed entry points

It's probably hard to tell exactly where those little bastards are coming from, but that's exactly why you need to close all potential entry points. It could be a privacy window or door, cracks in countertops, or something else as they can get into very small spaces. According to Orkin, most of the time they drain through "cracks, crevices, gaps and holes in foundations, window and door frames, soffits, attics and sub-floors". Therefore, proper sealing around any of these structures is essential. Pay particular attention to driveways near fruit trees, large gardens, or other agricultural hotspots, as these are where bed bugs will be attracted.

Tidy up the kitchen

Rethink the way you store food. If you've just used vegetable tongs, you may want to reevaluate and switch to a more airtight food storage container. The goal is to make it harder for them to survive and thrive when they are at home so that lack of access to food will lead them elsewhere.

Keep humidity low

Whether investing in a dehumidifier or replacing leaky pipes, super humid places with water retention or poor ventilation are considered breeding grounds for bed bugs. You can also tape off emergency drainage points if you suspect they might end up down your sink drains.

Get an essential oil diffuser

These fight off bed bugs, especially peppermint essential oil, but do not kill them. According to a study published in the Journal of Entomology , "All of the individual essential oils and a blend of ternary oils tested demonstrated significant defenses for both marbled insect nymphs and adults." The most effective were pure clove oil, lemongrass oil, spearmint oil, ylang-ylang oil, and then a mixture of a combination of all three. Less effective but still useful options include wintergreen oil, geranium oil, pennyroyal oil, and rosemary oil, which have shown a 60-85% reduction in drag for a bait trap.

Turn off your lights at night

Like most insects, bed bugs are attracted to light. So if you leave your porch lights (or any other lights on as soon as they step in) they will pour. The simple answer? Just turn them off or set them on a motion detection timer so they only turn on when someone walks by. Plus, it's more energy efficient and cheaper anyway.

Delete and share

Instead of crushing bed bugs like you might encounter other creepy pests, forego ... The infamous disgusting smell is chewed. You can collect them in a cup and then scoop them outside, or you can sweep or vacuum them. If you choose the latter, be sure to replace the vacuum bag and dispose of the used one immediately.
