Get Up, Clean Margate: Station's new art installation aims to help reduce the flood of rubbish in our ...

Thousands of people have flocked to Margate beaches since the blockade was eased earlier this year. With its beautiful golden sand beaches and easy transport links to London, Margate is the obvious vacation destination for many people unable to travel to mainland Europe this summer.

Margate's infrastructure is struggling to cope with this unprecedented surge in tourism. Garbage collection teams were overwhelmed, sanitary facilities were inadequate, and security guards had to be deployed on the beaches.

STAND UP. TO CLEAN UP. was founded in 2020 with the aim of inspiring, uniting and empowering the community to act as one. Companies and local residents quickly supported the initiative and to date volunteers have collected 437 garbage bags or more than 3,000 kg of garbage!

When it comes to waste, education is key and RUCU believes that enforcement and fines can go no further. Understanding the impact of your litter box on the immediate and wider environment is critical in order to effect long-term behavior change.

The station facility uses Margate's creative talents to convey this message in a fun and informative way. The installation was conceived as a collaboration between RUCU founder and designer Amy Cook and the local design agency Since Creative and will be on view at the Margate Station ticket office from July 20th and will run for the entire summer of 2021. This installation is aimed at visitors to Margate on the day and aims to raise awareness of the huge problem of litter plaguing Margate's beaches and the simple ways we can all come together to achieve it.

Most tourists enter Margate through the ticket office at the train station. Last summer, up to 1,500 people arrived at Margate Station every hour, which makes it an obvious place to start this engagement. The installation is a snake-shaped showcase filled with 75 garbage bags that shows people how much garbage is collected on the beach in a single day. The facility hopes to open people's eyes to the fact that even small single piles of trash can result in a large amount of trash.

The facility will also contain information on the impact plastics have on our oceans and advice on how to properly dispose of their waste. The project was funded through a crowdfunder campaign and generous donations from local organizations, all of which are listed on the facility.

With education comes the power to make better decisions, not just for yourself but for the community at large. RUCU hopes this installation will have a powerful visual impact that will stay with people long after their visit to Margate. Not only do the residents benefit from this, but also the oceans and the native fauna.

RUCU co-founder Alanna McGill Tagg said, "This is not about shaming people or preaching to them. It's about creating a positive message that conveys what Margate means to your community, how hard we work to keep the beaches safe, and how we can all help maintain Margate's beauty.
