Pearls of Communication: Tips To Answer These Burning Questions About Pet Dentistry - DVM 360

The veterinarian and President of the Animal Dentistry Foundation (FVD) gave important advice in order to answer the most common dental questions of his customers.

What is the most common question pet owners ask about dental procedures? According to veterinary dental expert Jan Bellows, DVM, DAVDC, DABVP, FAVD, it's all about "How will your pet eat after a dental procedure that requires teeth extraction?"

In a recent interview with dvm360 ® , Bellows answered the 2 most frequently asked questions of its dental customers and gave advice on how best to answer them.

"The answer is really simple," the staff of Bellows dvm360® said. "Animals don't need teeth to eat. You don't have to run and kill a rabbit to eat. We give them pre-digested food so that they can cope well without inflamed teeth. "

Then he shared the second most frequently asked question: "How much will it cost?" The answer? Bellows puts it simply: veterinarians won't know until after treatment.

"This question is difficult for a veterinarian to answer because we don't have an X-ray and therefore don't know which of the 42 teeth in the animal's mouth needs to be treated. Some [teeth] may need to be extracted. others need treatment, a thorough cleaning ... and some will be fine and can be left alone after cleaning, "explained Bellows.

"We tell our customers that we will contact them as soon as they are under general anesthesia and their teeth have been cleaned and examined.
