Casper Fire-EMS reminds residents of winter safety tips for the home - KGWN.tv

CASPER, Wyoming (Wyoming News Now) - In the next three months, more than half of all heating fires will occur in homes nationwide. Casper Fire-EMS is reminding residents to be careful this holiday season.

"Make sure that any heating equipment you use is at least three feet away from flammable materials. This now specifically includes any decorations you can put up for the holidays, especially your Christmas trees, "said Andrew Sundell, Public Information Manager at Casper Fire-EMS.

If you use a heater in your home, officials say you shouldn't use extension cords. They must be plugged directly into an electrical outlet. About a third of all decoration fires are kindled by candles. Candles should be kept 12 inches from any combustible material. Casper Fire-EMS recommends the use of battery operated candles. Authorities say that making sure your fireplace is clean is also important.

"We recommend cleaning them every year. One service that the Casper Fire Department offers is we make fireplace brushes available to the public and sign up, and you can clean your own fireplace for free. These are available at station one, "said Sundell.

If you don't want to clean your fireplace, Casper Fire-EMS recommends calling in a professional to keep your home safe.
