"We put workers in their place": Island Health should be carried out internally ...

People at Vancouver Island health facilities will benefit from stable, consistent, and supportive patient care as support services and pre-contracted services will return internally as hospital staff. 'Island health.

The government notes that these services are making a comeback internally after being outsourced to private companies for nearly 20 years.

In the fall of 2021, health officials reported a phased approach to the rollback of cleaning and restoration contracts under 21 commercial service contracts. Island Health is the first British Columbia agency to make this change.

"To the people who kept Vancouver Island hospitals, long-term care homes, and patient diets clean, I say, 'Welcome!' That's what Prime Minister John Horgan said. "Our government is correcting the mistakes made nearly 20 years ago to improve wages, working conditions and job security for healthcare workers. It is time for you to be treated like the valued team members you are again.

According to the province, the movement began when the British Columbia government enacted the Health Care Act Repeal Act by ordinance on July 1, 2019. Bill 47 repealed two existing laws: the law that respects improving the delivery of health services. and Social Services (Law 29) and the Health Cooperation Agreements Law (Law 94), which facilitated outsourcing of health care and had a significant impact on the workforce.

"Now we are assigning the employees to their place internally within our health authorities," said Health Minister Adrian Dix.

"Law 47 was an important step towards basic equality in public health care in our province. Repatriation from cleaning and restoration contracts is good for patients, workers, the care team, and the hiring of future caregivers. I am proud that Island Health is leading the way and I hope that more workers receive the wages, conditions and benefits they deserve to do the vital and vital work to well care for the people of British Columbia in our facilities.

Harry Bains, Secretary of Labor, added that the move will also enable the government to ensure that health center workers get the salary and job security they deserve.

Workers from six Island Health locations in cleaning, catering and mixed services will be moved to the following facilities for a total of 235 repatriated workers:

* Saanich Peninsula Hospital

* Queen Alexandra Center for Child Health

* Glengarry Hospital

* Aberdeen Hospital

* Hospital on Gorge Road

* Priory Long Term Care (Hiscock and Heritage Woods)

Health officials will continue to bring back workers under Bill 47 for the next two years, bringing about 4,000 workers back to the company. Other health agencies include Fraser Health, Providence Health Care, Provincial Health Agency, and Vancouver Coastal Health.
