How do I remove oil stains from my driveway? - KTAR News

The attractiveness of your home is greatly affected by the condition of your concrete driveway. When your concrete is saturated with oils, greases and coolant, it's time to give your front yard a little facelift.

If you have wet oil and grease stains, you need to start with cat litter. The sand will absorb excess oil and make stain removal easier.

Cover the entire stain generously with kitty litter and leave for a few days. Then sweep up the cat litter. You can now start cleaning. Pour the entire area first. Use a solution that is one part water and one part detergent. Bruce Stumbo, Project Manager, Rosie Right | Draft. To build. remodel. suggests Goof Off Concrete Cleaner .

"Any hardware store these days usually has a decent concrete cleaner," he says. "The most important thing is that you follow the instructions."

Let the solution sit for a few minutes, then scrub the area with the broom. Concrete is porous; By absorbing a layer of water into the concrete, the cleaner can better penetrate the surface. Then treat the oldest, darkest areas first.

Once you water these areas, you'll notice that instead of those dark spots, there are clean, light spots. So even though you've removed the dark spots from the concrete, the concrete still looks uneven. Use a milder mixture of cleaner and water, treat the entire driveway, and scrub with the broom. This will remove tire marks, light rust stains, fruit stains (like olives and dates), and dirt.

The cleaner slightly etches the concrete surface. You will get a much more even color when the entire area has been treated.

If you use a chemical cleaner on your driveway, use products that are not toxic to animals or harmful to vegetation.

If you use a pressure washer, read the instructions for use carefully before using it. You can damage concrete if you use a setting that is too high in the cleaning process. Be sure to wear rubber gloves, goggles, and rubber boots to avoid injury.

Once the driveway is clean, use a sealer to prevent future staining of the concrete surface. OKON manufactures various concrete sealers and should be applied every 1-2 years.
