Lawn costing just 67p 'keeps flies out of your house all summer' - Daily Record

Cleaning experts have revealed a clever trick to keep pesky flies away from your home while you enjoy the summer breeze through your windows.

The helping hand comes from nature, with the scent of a simple houseplant enough to ensure pesky neighbors leave you alone.

Basil repels flies because they hate a strong smell. So if you put a pot of basil on your windowsill, flies are less likely to enter your home, reports The Mirror.

Mint is also said to repel flies, which can also be found in supermarkets for under £2. You can get a jar of basil at Aldi for just 67p, while Tesco charges £1.30 for a medium jar of basil or mint.

The cleaning experts at Tap Warehouse have revealed how to keep flies out of your kitchen this summer. Cleaning expert Polly Shearer says: "Heat causes an increase in flies and means houseflies are more likely to breed in hot weather!

"This could result in tens of thousands of flies buzzing around grills and kitchens this summer. We recommend taking preventive measures to prevent flies and bugs from multiplying in your kitchen this summer."

Here are some more tips on how to keep flies away from your home:

1. Make your own natural fly spray

Flies hate the smell of essential oils like lemongrass, lavender, and peppermint. You can make your own natural fly spray simply by adding a few drops of these oils to a spray bottle of water. Lavender is the perfect choice as it makes the room smell fresh.

Just spray the natural remedy around your kitchen throughout the day and it should keep flies from entering.

2. Store fizzy drinks in your fridge and clean up spills immediately

Fruit flies are attracted to the carbon dioxide in carbonated drinks. So if you leave these drinks outside, fruit flies can congregate around your kitchen area, especially if there is a spill.

Make sure you wipe up any spills and clean the bottles to prevent fruit flies from being attracted to them. You can also keep your sodas in the fridge to keep them away from fruit flies.

3. Don't leave dirty dishes near the sink.

During the busy summer months, especially during school holidays, it can be difficult to find time to wash dirty dishes. However, leaving the dishes to be washed near the sink will attract flies.

We advise you to wash your dishes as soon as possible in the summer to prevent flies from contaminating your dishes with bacteria and even laying eggs on them.

4. Use apple cider vinegar to deter fruit flies

Fruit flies in summer can wreak havoc in your kitchen, often leading to food waste as people don't want to eat fruit infested by the flies. If your kitchen has fruit flies, you should fill a jar halfway with apple cider vinegar and cover it with cling film and poke small holes in the cling film.

This should attract fruit flies into the jar and you can then release them outside of your home. It is also important to refrigerate the fruit to prevent the flies from returning. You can buy a bottle of apple cider vinegar from Tesco for under five pounds.

5. Keep your kitchen trash can dry with baking soda.

Everything you throw in the trash will rot, but this process speeds up in the summer months due to the warmer weather. This attracts flies, bugs and worms, so it's important to clean and empty the bin more frequently during the summer.

A good tip is to sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of your trash can before putting a new trash bag in it. The baking soda should absorb odors and liquids that come out of the bag.

6. Store leftovers in bags and storage containers fully sealed

Flies like to lay their eggs in places with warmer temperatures, so don't leave leftovers uncovered when letting them cool.

Instead, place leftovers in a bag or jar that can be fully sealed to prevent flies from touching the food.
