Lynsey said: "To save money and energy it's always best to wash at lower temperatures, but when it comes to bed linen, towels and underwear, try washing them above 60 degrees."

Most clothing can be washed at 40°C, but bed linen as well as towels, socks, underwear and coats should be washed at a minimum temperature of 60°C to adequately kill bacteria.

However, Lynsey shared that one of the most cost-effective ways to maintain a "cool" bed is to simply open the windows as soon as you wake up.

She said: "Before you make the bed in the morning, let it air out, preferably with the windows open." »

Pillowcases in particular should be washed more frequently in summer, as pillows are more likely to absorb moisture and bacteria can quickly accumulate, but washing at high temperatures is not necessary.

Lynsey said: "Always use good, thick pillowcases and wash them every time you change your bedding.

"If your pillows are made of polyester, you can machine wash them on a low temperature with your regular detergent, but do not use fabric softener.

"I recommend you rinse twice to remove as much suds as possible. For the second rinse, you can also add a capful of white vinegar to eliminate bad odors and yellow stains.
