With 56 rooms and 96,000 square feet of space under management, Hoyt Fields, chief curator of Hearst Castle, is the busiest property manager in the world. But how did he manage to preserve the mansion that William Randolph Hearst built in central California from 1919 until his death in 1947?
Hearst Castle in San Simeon, one of America's most famous houses, now a state park and a National Historic Landmark, welcomes nearly a million visitors each year. In addition, there are licensing agreements with suppliers of high-quality furnishings and artisans who draw inspiration from them. The fees are used to maintain the coastal property, which, with its 165 rooms, appears to be a logistical nightmare. We asked Hoyt for some spring cleaning tips.
