Many tricks use items you already have at home, but which ones work best?

Heidi Phillips, owner of Tergo Specialist Cleaning Services, says: "While social media can be a great place to find helpful cleaning tips, remember that not all of them work.

"And some are really dangerous."

Lynsey Hope, mother of three, compares popular advice and gives it a maximum of ten points, while Heidi gives her expert opinion.

Then clean the head with an old toothbrush.

After replacing, leave the shower head warm to remove all glue.

Lynsey says: "It was incredibly effective. After soaking for an hour, almost all of the limescale deposits had disappeared and scrubbing was no longer necessary. Impressively."

RATING: 9.

Heidi says: "The acids in Coca-Cola can remove dirt, soot and limescale . However, if the shower head is very dirty, the performance may not be sufficient.

TIP 2: White vinegar.

Same as above, but instead soak your shower head in distilled white vinegar mixed with water.

Lynsey says: "I loved this method too. It worked well and the vinegar was even cheaper than Coca-Cola. No scrubbing necessary.

RATING: 10.

Heidi says: "White vinegar is acidic and removes limescale. However, if your showerhead is damaged, soaking it in an acidic product can cause additional damage.

Make your windows shine:

DIARY V BLACK TEA

TIP 1: Use newspaper.

Try cleaning the glass with newspaper to maintain a stain-free surface.

Wear gloves to keep your hands free of ink.

Lynsey said: "I thought my windows would be dirty afterwards but it worked well. Since my hands were dirty, I wore gloves.

RATING: 6.

Heidi says: "The fibers used to make newspapers are soft enough to be used safely on glass, but the ink can bleed and leave marks. It's much easier to spend £1 on a window cleaning spray.

TIP 2: Black tea.

Tea contains tannic acid and has a similar effect to vinegar.

Prepare a large pot and let it cool before starting work on the windows and mirrors.

Lynsey says: "Surprisingly it worked very well. My windows have never been so bright.

RATING: 8.

Heidi says: "A cheap and effective trick that really works." The tannin in tea is great for making glass super shiny. However, use a soft cloth as it can be rough and cause scratches.

Dirty Pan Bombing:

ORGANIC LAUNDRY V Baking powder

TIP 1: Boil organic detergent.

Once the dirty pan has cooled, fill it with water and add 1 tablespoon of organic laundry detergent.

Place the pan back on the stove and bring to a boil.

Let it simmer for ten minutes and then rinse.

Lynsey says: "A great tip for very dirty pans that can't be cleaned in the sink alone. »

RATING: 10.

Heidi says: "Organic detergent contains enzymes that break down food and stains. So when combined with the heat of boiling water, this trick really works." Alternatively, you can also use a dishwasher tablet.

TIP 2: Baking powder.

Baking soda doesn't clean pans either

Heat water over medium-low heat for five minutes, then add baking soda.

If the pan is badly burned, also try adding 2 teaspoons of lemon juice to create a bubble reaction and remove any residue.

Lynsey says: "It took a long time and didn't work out as well as I had hoped.

RATING: 2.

Heidi says: "The active ingredients (baking soda and lemon) will probably be too diluted to wash away the food. »

Beautify plants:

MAYO V PLATING LIQUID

TIP 1: Rub with mayonnaise.

Clean dusty houseplants with mild soap and water, then use a paper towel to rub a drop of mayonnaise onto the tops of the leaves to give them more vibrancy.

Lynsey says: "It got the leaves nice and shiny but it was a bit messy so I doubt I'll do it again. »

RATING: 3.

Heidi says: "Although the oil in mayonnaise makes the leaves shiny, it could damage them by clogging the plant's stomata, which could result in the plant not taking in enough water. I wouldn't recommend it.

TIP 2: Dishwashing liquid.

Put some dish soap in a bowl and gently wipe your plant's leaves with a damp cloth.

Lynsey says: "My plants looked cleaner than ever afterwards, all the leaves were very shiny. »

RATING: 9.

Heidi says, "I'm a big fan of using dishwashing detergent on almost anything cleaning-related, and yes, you can safely use it on houseplants too." »

Make your oven shine:

BABY OIL V WD40

TIP 1: Baby oil.

Put some baby oil on a clean cloth and rub it all over the surface of your stainless steel or ceramic hob.

Lynsey says: "It did a great job of removing fingerprints and smudges from my plate , but the fire hazard was a concern." I didn't know baby oil was flammable, but that's because it contains paraffin. This stops me from using it again.

NOTE 1.

Heidi says: "Baby oil gives stainless steel a nice shine, but doesn't clean it. You should also keep in mind that you need to polish the plate carefully, otherwise there is a risk of starting a fire the next time the plate is heated up.

TIP 2: WD-40.

WD-40 is also flammable and should not be used near food preparation areas.

Use some WD-40 and wipe down the stove with a microfiber cloth.

Lynsey said: "The smell was unpleasant but it made the hob turn on fine. Honestly, even if it worked, I wouldn't use this trick again since WD-40 is flammable.
