Laundry expert lays down 7 key rules to stop ruining your washing machine - Daily Express

Washing machines can fail quickly if unwanted items end up in the laundry room. While doing laundry is a given for most Britons, the way you do it can damage both your clothes and your device. Express.co.uk has spoken with the laundry expert Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of Laundryheap to find out how your clothes properly and what steps you should always follow.

Check small items

One of the most common washing mistakes is leaving small items in pockets or sleeves.

While loose objects can be difficult to spot before the washing machine is turned on, they can often be heard very clearly as soon as they begin to spin around the drum.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk , Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of Laundryheap, said, "Cracking noises during a wash cycle generally mean that small items like coins, wire necks or even buttons have accidentally entered your washing machine ...

"At high washing speeds, they can get stuck in the outer wash tub, drain hose or pump on your machine. "

Deyan recommends that you consult your machine manual immediately for instructions on how to access each area and remove items as soon as possible.

The long-term effects of this simple mistake can cause large holes or even change the shape of the drum, a costly repair for an avoidable incident.

Keep loads light

Handling piles of laundry at once may seem productive, but over time it can cause significant damage to your machine.

A damaged washing machine drum can cause leaks during a wash cycle if unbalanced loads are used frequently.

Constant friction or uneven pounding can cause the drum to change shape, which can affect your drainage system, explains Deyan.

He added, "To reduce the risk of leaks, always do a balanced wash cycle: make sure the laundry doesn't twist and avoid constant washing with heavy loads to avoid warping the drum."

Reduce fabric softener

Fabric softener is known for its smooth results and fragrant fragrance, but this luxurious liquid doesn't always need to be used when washing.

Fluffy bath towels can go crispy and flat quickly if not properly washed, but Deyan says there is an easy fix.

He said, "Avoid fabric softeners when cleaning towels as they can lose their absorbent properties.

"I would recommend washing towels regularly on low heat to keep them their original color, size, and shape, and not to over-dry them in the dryer, as this can cause them to lose lint and become stiff."

Check the contents of your laundry basket

Throwing a load of clothes in the washer is certainly a quick way to speed the process, but Deyan emphasizes the importance of properly loading fabrics.

Before loading the washing machine, make sure that the sleeves and legs of the pants are not folded inward or tangled with other clothing, as this can result in uneven washing.

take care of the jeans

Deyan said, "Washing denim garments inside out, especially jeans, prevents colors from fading quickly and also protects the surfaces of other garments from friction damage when washed.

"It can also extend the life of older, more sensitive denim garments, especially those made from stretch blends, and prevent tearing."

Protect your prints

Turn printed tops over before washing to prevent tearing or fading of graphic designs while effectively removing sweat stains from areas of close skin contact.

Do not put everything in the washing machine

Washing machines are great for handling large loads of laundry at once, but there are a few things that should never be turned on the silver drum.

Delicate fabrics are not designed to withstand heavy washing machine cycles and should be hand washed.

According to Deyan, the following items of clothing should never be washed on the standard cycle:

  • Fasteners - Snap fasteners and tires can damage your machine as the fabric loses shape and color.
  • Ties: Silk or wool ties can shrink and lose their shape when machine washed.
  • Embellished Items: Sequins, buttons, and zippers are easily damaged if left unprotected
  • Baby Socks - Socks can actually disappear into your machine's vents and cause flooding
  • Silk Items - Most silk items can tear, shrink, and lose their shape if not properly washed.
