Life Hack: 3 Cleaning Tips Every Pet Owner Should Know - Irish Examiner

If you share your home with a pet, chances are you've had some cleaning issues. Whether it's fun clinging to every surface, a pee smell that won't quite dissipate, or a few dirty paw prints that don't show, these methods will soon have your home looking and smelling fresh.

Pet hair can end up anywhere, even in spaces your four-legged friend will never venture into. If you're having trouble picking up loose pet hair with a lint roller, you probably have an even better tool in your kitchen. Put on rubber gloves and run them over the affected area. All those pesky hairs get stuck on the gloves and you can just rinse them off with water in the sink. It works great on sofa covers, bedding, and rugs, all those fancy surfaces that hair gets stuck to.

messy puddles

Any pet owner will tell you that accidents happen, especially when it comes to a young pet or an aging pet. Vinegar is particularly suitable for dogs and cats against the puddles of urine that occur from time to time. Pour the vinegar on the spot as soon as you notice it. This will neutralize the ammonia in pet urine and limit the odor it causes. Then cover the area with baking soda to absorb any remaining moisture. After at least an hour, vacuum the area to restore it to its pre-urination shine. Baking soda is a handy pantry ingredient to have around the house if you have pets. Not only does it help purify urine, but it also deodorizes. If you notice your upholstery or carpet smelling like dogs, sprinkle baking soda on it, leave for a few minutes, and vacuum. Catch the scent and you'll end up with a refreshed room.

dirty claws

The little paws can track the dirt and mud in your house as they walk through the door. To keep your home clean, treat your pet's feet like your own after a walk. When you get home, you probably wipe your shoes on a carpet to remove dirt. Although Fido is unlikely to learn this trick, it's a good idea to put a towel by the door before you take your pet out so that when you return, you can quickly grab them and wipe their paws before they enter your home. If the muddy part of your hike is a little far and you think the dirt will dry up by the time you get back, also keep a bowl of water by the door to give your paws a good wash. Clean legs make for a cleaner home, and it's a lot easier than wiping the mud off your couch.
