Brooklyn plumbing experts offer tips to cut home water bills as costs continue to rise

Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling and Drain Cleaning of New York says it's possible to save money on utility bills and conserve water at the same time by following a few simple tips

BROOKLYN, NY , Aug. 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- As utility bills soar in New York City , the plumbing experts at Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning , a family-owned home services business serving Brooklyn and Manhattan , have been arguing for more than one Century that homeowners could save money and conserve water by changing their water-use habits and considering minor plumbing upgrades.

"Infrastructure improvements and utility costs in general are driving up water prices, as are many other necessities," said Michael Petri , owner of Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning. "But there are simple ways to reduce your consumption, which will help lower your water bill and protect a valuable resource we all depend on every day."

Petri said here's what homeowners can do to lower their electric bills:

  1. Do not leave the water running while you are shaving or brushing your teeth. Turning off the water during these tasks can save up to four gallons of water per day per person. Depending on the number of people in the household, this can save hundreds of gallons each month.
  2. Take shorter showers. A cool shower can be nice on a hot summer day, but reducing the shower to just four minutes can save a homeowner up to 4,000 gallons a year.
  3. Install a low-flow showerhead and low-flow toilet. A low-flow showerhead can help reduce water use by up to 50%, while a low-flow toilet can reduce water use by up to 13,000 gallons of water per year.
  4. Wait for the laundry basket and dishwasher to be full. Do not run the washing machine or dishwasher until they are full. This will reduce the frequency with which homeowners need to run these devices, saving water on a monthly basis.
  5. Do not wash dishes by hand before putting them in the dishwasher. Most newer dishwashers can handle some leftover food. If a plate has food stuck to it, instead of constantly rinsing it under the tap, run the water down the sink with the drain off and let the plate soak.
  6. Water outdoor plants at dawn or dusk. In the afternoon, water from the soil can evaporate so quickly that the plant doesn't have time to absorb it. Watering in the morning or evening gives the plants more time to absorb the water.

"We can all do our part to reduce our water use, which is great for the planet," Petri said. "And if you take a few simple steps to reduce your water use, you can save money too, which is good for your wallet."
